Installed TRD Pro tail lights, I didn’t like the chrome that came with the TRDOR.

Also installed OEM bed lights while I had taillights off

Next replaced the gray/silver sticker for a matte black

A couple of things coming out of today’s oil change:

    1) Like many before me, the housing was torqued way too tight (prior oil change done by dealer). So much so I needed to turn my torque wrench into a breaker bar (yes, I know not advised)…and damaged the Motivx filter wrench in the process but did get it off.
    57235B61-CB85-4106-BE5E-556C2A3E1CCE.jpg

    2) Had decided to replace the plastic housing with the aluminum version. I set and lubed the o ring appropriately. All seemed fine though it was very snug while screwing back in. Proceeded to fill with the new oil, then heard the dreaded slow drip. Backed the housing out to find the o ring had snapped. Must have not been seated properly or overtightened or both. Learn from my mistakes…(went back to the original housing - may try the aluminum next time. No leak so far).

I've been posting about this issue for some time. Anyone who uses the motive filter wrench needs to use a socket over the top and not an extension. The extension will strip out eventually.

I turned my ratchet wrench into a breaker bar by adding a 2ft aluminum tube...worked fine with slow turn and did not damage the filter wrench.

What I learned...it doesn't take much torque to get a proper seal...I hand turned the aluminum housing until it clicked/locked in-place.

The reason why I came to this conclusion, I did the last oil change and didn't think I torqued it much at all.

My guess is...the engine vacuum must cause the filter housing to create snugness...because I did not think I gorilla tightened it! lol

I put some oil on both o-rings before installing. The o-ring needs to be put where you see it in this photo.

I believe it snapped into place from the clip seen here. The new aluminum housing has less winglets so aligning the housing wrench is not as tricky.

The housing wrench I used is in this photo...as is the Fumoto Valve I installed.

    Great tip
So it’s not that the filter housing gets over torqued. I use an annually calibrated torque wrench. It’s the o-ring that dries out, even though it is lined with oil upon installation. It simply hardens due to the engine’s heat cycles.

I use a 24” breaker bar to loosen the filter housing. It’s just the way o-rings work. Have seen this for decades in the aircraft industry

    A nice alternative to Fumoto.
I can say, I’ve had a Fumoto valve on the FJ since 2008 and ZERO leaks
