What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

How does it lift the vehicle then, does the new shock have the spring perch moved up on the shock body 2", or does it extend the lower body down by 2" for the lift??

As they say, learn something new every day... lol

 

Is that like a drive thru garage? It looks like a garage door in front and behind the truck.

 

I believe the Springs are same across the board...but need to verify.

I have these shocks on mine. 3 circlip settings providing 1", 1.5", or 2" of lift. They reuse the factory spring and it doesn't matter if it's the Off-Road or Sport as long as your springs aren't shot. You just have to figure out what you want to use for rear lift.

Thanks for reply.

The Tech who does installs was saying I needed new springs. Also, that he doesn't change the height on the shock considering it has 3 circlips--"they are factory set."

When I asked the factory height, Tech did not know.

Parts Guy is calling Mother Toyota to confirm any other requirements other than R2 shock and use OEM Spring--also, what the factory height setting is.

 

It looks like they are factory set for a 2" lift in those pics, as well as other pics I found online. This makes sense since it is sold as a lift kit.

A 2021 should not need new springs.

 

Yessir it is - back door opens to backyard grass & a trailer drop area. I think the guy who built the shop in the early 00s was a gearhead with some metal fab work happening here.

I don’t have a trailer (or need for one yet) but would be nice if I do. Right now it’s just nice for air circulation when I’m woodworking or wrenching

 

How many miles on your truck? Theres a snowballs chance in hell you need new springs. I personally would not trust that shop after hearing this + them saying "the lift kit does not lift the truck"

 

So OK, I understand how shocks work, but am new to this newer 4wd stuff, and I have no skin in the game as mine is a rwd, but racing shocks can have different adjustable settings for rebound and compression rather it be for drag or any kind of track or off road racing, but any adjusted height adjustment is done by the spring and or raising the spring up/down the shock body (adjustable coil overs, I have one in my garage right now), but have not heard of a shock alone being able to adjust ride height.. So I am very curious as to how this works.... Just trying to wrap my head around it... lol

 

What you're referring to is an adjustable coilover.

The TRD shock body pictured is similar to some mountain bike forks. I have one like that and it's adjusted in a similar fashion, with a circlip thats inside the main body for different amounts of travel. In this case, the circlip is where the spring perch sits. The closer the perches are together (setting 3 in the pic), the more lift you get. Not ideal as it changes the spring compression especially if the spring is progressive rate. Not sure what the stock springs are though.

 

Assuming that the spring perches are the same distance, a shock alone could only provide lift if it is a longer shock eye-to-eye. Essentially the same as a spacer.

 

@TacoTime55 Ed I agree with this assessment. I’d get a second opinion because I would bet you a large sum of money that tech is full of crap and you don’t need new springs. Especially because if I remember correctly, I think you have relatively low miles on your truck right? My 2021 is about to hit 77K miles and my springs are in perfect shape. AND I do a fair amount of off-road driving.

I highly, highly doubt you need new suspension (struts or springs).

 

I'm coming up on 33K miles on my Sport.

All street driving and the undercarriage is very clean.

The Tech probably thought these were TRD Fox Springs...which do require new springs.

And these are the Shocks from the TRD Lift Kit: 2 inches up front and 1 inch in the rear.

 

what lift do you need? I would just do the 5100 swap with factory springs in front and a block in the rear.

the TRD kit is wildly overpriced.

 

I talked to the Parts Guy who read the install instructions and said new springs are not needed.

Parts Guy also said it was part of the TRD Lift Kit--so I'm pretty sure he's spot on.

The TRD Lift Kit is upwards of $1500 + labor.
The shocks in this kit are $395 which are all 4 shocks.

I'm thinking the Tech must of thought they were TRD Fox Shocks which do require new springs.

I've got almost 33K miles on my truck.

 

Eye to eye length is going to effect max droop not ride height. Ride height is determined by how far the spring is mounted from the end.

 

Keep in mind that the TRD lift kit uses a 1in block in the rear to achieve that lift. It can be purchased seperately for cheap. There is also an OEM 1/2" block available.

 

The front shocks have 3 height settings for the top of the spring- so it is moving the shock up/down the body like you said. On a coilover there is usually a threaded collar for infinite adjustment, these just have 3 discreet settings and you need a coil spring compressor to adjust them.

Rear shocks will need new leaf springs, add-a-leaf or a spacer block to get lift.

 

I researched the Bilstein 5100 Leveling Kit and saw how the circlip can be adjusted between 1"-2".

So I asked Dealership if they could tell me what upgraded shocks can be installed on my truck.

I gave them my VIN and they told me about this kit.

This TRD Kit includes front and rear shocks (2" lift up front) and is priced less than the Bilstein's front/rear kit.

The Labor will cost more than the shocks themselves...I'll have to save for this upgrade.

 

not sure if you’re able, but it’s a somewhat simple job. Can rent a spring compressor from most auto parts stores. Will need a jack, jack stands, impact gun and sockets. Being your truck is new, won’t really have to fight rust or frozen hardware either.
