ha Frank spit a freeze plug. Although it was really a block heater. But was right around 100kish Id guess.

You made the right call. Better not to burn up the pump or have power steering going around a turn at high speed and it cavitate and then lose power steering. I honestly don't see how not having it is dangerous. It sucks on technical terrain having the wheel yanked left and right with every rock. Definitely don't want your thumb in the wheel but street driving isn't too bad. To think there was a time when vehicles didn't have power steering...

Well, wheel bearing noise ive been chasing for a couple months went away after I changed rear diff fluid last night. Guess ill get on regearing my spare diff in that case

 

Add me to the leaky rack party. Only leaking out the passenger side a little though, and only sometimes it's bad, most of the time it's not. I put in a brand new OEM one in before Moab 2017. If I ever go LT I have been wanting to figure out how to get a tundra one in. It's the only way I can think of using the extra width without cutting shit down.

*EDIT* Looking deeper into it it also seems like the lines come in a different way too.

Yeah to mount it to the tailgate or I can do 1/8 holes and rivets can be used. Actual plate will have riv nuts to hold the license plate

 

If your arms are strong enough it's not gonna hurt anything to run without the pump going for a bit, not really unsafe. It gets easy at speed and slow its not dangerous because well.. slow haha

 

Yeah I would also argue there is no danger, only really needing to plan and think when in tight parking lots. THat's what I dealt with when I blew my pump in NH. I basically found big parking lots, pull through spots, and not getting too close to crowded sections where I needed a 5mph sharp turn.

 

I ran around most the winter without power steering and then another two weeks in August.

street is fine, parking lots aren’t fun, driving around slow anywhere without PS isn’t fun

Just to clear that up

 

I already had the new rack (it seems). They must have introduced it just before mine rolled off the line for the 2000 model year. But yeah, for most folks pre-2000, the new rack is an upgrade for sure.

I think it really depends on how much it's spitting. Mine leaks about 1oz. in 10 days. At that level, I've opted to just refill it every now and then. No risk of cavitation, etc. So safer to drive with it still connected.

If, on the other hand, fluid is just flowing through and you're emptying quarts of ATF into the reservoir. Yeah, I'd pull the belt too.

 

It's not a point of masculinity, it's a statement of strength is the only function besides vehicle speed that determines how easily you can manhandle it without the power steering pump. I had to drive my gray truck without one a couple of times because I ordered the wrong supercharger belt. Above 20 mph so it feels about the same as with the pump

 

The photo of your old rack sure looked like it had the old roller guide. My 2000 had the old style. I upgraded it a few years ago. That, and the tack weld mod, really tightened up the steering.

 

IDK how I still haven't done this but I think next time the interior is ripped apart I plan on it.

 

eh mine dumped all its steering fluid once. I drove it fine to the nearest area to get more fluid. Was fine. Wasn't fun to drive without it on the trail but on the road it wasn't that different to me.
