What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

It was a beautiful 70° afternoon here today. Took advantage of it by washing the truck and sanding priming and painting her sliders.

 

My cousins and I friends of there's just nailed a cow on the Hwy in a sedan last week

 

Got the brake working, this may be a once a year only used at the inspection station type setup as an FYI. The cables hang too low for me and I would tear them off on a rock or tree branch wheeling where I do. I managed to get the stock Tacoma cables to reach the 80 bell cranks. I do have the rear section of fj80 parking brake cable, but it's too short to reach the Tacoma parking brake lever. If I was doing something permanent that would be used offroad, I would lengthen the cables at the axle and mount the taco parking brake cable higher.

 

That is pretty fabulous. Thank god I don’t have vehicle inspections, I tore all the parking brake stuff off my 80 axle. Didn’t have any of the cables anyway.
What do you do for a brake, if anything? I have a line lock, would like to mount a driveline brake at the transfer case.

 

I'm looking to do the same and mount a brake on the rear driveline at the case too. Doesn't look super hard to make a bracket but we would need to sacrifice a kit for the "caliper" mechanism and disc.

 

Thank God I kept most of the parts LOL!! Before moving here I had to only do emissions inspections, now they have "safety inspections" here. Just another fee IMO.

I Park it in gear and I have some chocks from an airport I used to work at. I haven't used a parking brake in over 10yrs, thank you toyota for your crappy bell crank design.

 

@drr Would a hydro trans e-brake be a concern, I can get little calipers pretty easy that would be cake to mount compared to the massive mechanical ones t-case brakes usually use. I was thinking a motorcycle brake or even a rear caliper off a crown vic or something. Those are both small and plentiful. Then a hydro e-brake with a mechanical lock or just a line lock would work.

 

The issue with driveline brakes, just like using the trans to keep it from rolling, is if you break something driveline related you are kinda screwed. Still need some blocks or something. I think this is where a line lock would be handier over a driveline brake. I'm also only thinking offroad. Day to day just leave it in gear.

 

I've had it start rolling in gear unfortunately. 1st gear can only hold so much, even in low.

 

If you leave it in 4WD a trans brake still works on the fronts though or the rear conversely if you break a front part.

 

I had that happen on a jeep I had, never on the Tacoma luckly. I toss it in R 4.7:1 low if I park on something stupid steep (facing down hill), 1st if facing uphill. I also don't have 5000 extra lbs of RTT and gear hanging off the truck, so it's kinda "light" for what it is, especially when I'm just tooling around town.

 

What do you mean by sacrifice a kit? I agree a bracket would be easy to come up with.

Would you just T into the rear brake line? My only concern would be having all the braking dependent on that one brake line, in case a fitting near the MC goes out or something. That’s my only beef with my current line lock setup.

 

No, I'd have a completely separate hydraulic system for the e-brake, It's one relatively short line (two fittings total) if you run a floor mount brake handle/master.

Might not need to buy a minitruck kit at all if you think we can come up with a disc.

 

Oh I see, yeah that makes sense.
Plenty of places make driveline caliper/disc kits, probably just start with one of those.

Or get a full minitruck setup and we can split it haha

Hitting a cow at 50 mph is a hell of an impact. The only thing that I know of that can survive that is a cow catcher on a train, and only because the cow catcher is wedge shaped to deflect them up and to the side. If it was flat, I don't think even that would hold up to a cow at 50 mph.

 

It's all 1" plate steel. It holds up
