The first time I changed my own oil - after having it changed at the dealer for the first 15 years of the truck's life - I had a bear of a time getting the filter off. But, since doing it myself, it's always been super easy.

An oil filter should never be all that tightly attached; screw it on by hand, and when it starts to snug up (i.e. the rubber seal is contacting the mating surface), you know you're getting close. Continue to tighten (again, by finger) another 1/4 - 3/4 a turn or so. You should still be able to - relatively easily - loosen it. The threading on the mount is fine enough that you'll have plenty of compression on the seal at that point, so you don't need to worry about leaks, and you won't need wrenches or anything to get the filter off. Just reach your left hand up in there (I go in from the front, over the front crossmember) and loosen the filter.

That is exactly how I have always done it, except for the getting it off part. I do go a full 3/4 of a turn after contact. Maybe if I keep it to 1/2 turn and when I go to take it off clean it up good so I can get a real good grip on it. I don't know, it's always been a struggle to get it off. It would have to be a lot easier to be able to get it by hand.

I have one of those things you put on the end of it and use a ratchet to take it off for the wife's 4-runner and it works great. Her's has those fancy cartridge filters. I have one for my truck to, but it's a cheap Wal-Mart one and it sucks. Plus these OEM filters seem to be a slight bit smaller than the ones I have used in the past making the wrench thing completly useless.

These are pretty handy if the filter is on too tight to get it off by hand, fits just about any size and digs into it a little to get purchase.

Replaced my pinion seal, i think this one was pretty done. Gotta replace an o2 sensor gasket that got lost when doing my exhaust and change the oil.

I prefer Bosch or Wix. K&N's have a bad reputation for leaks at the spot-welded nut. I also do motorcycle trackdays and I've used oem whenever possible (or HiFlow in a pinch). In fact, most race orgs have banned K&N oil filters.

Didn’t do much because there’s not much that needs doing. I replaced the air filter and in a fit of OCD I cleaned the radiator fan.

    Ya... whatever.

Many >Moto racing< bodies banned after market oil filters in general... not specifically K&N.

K&N had some problems, like 6 years ago... like every company can have. Plenty of of oil filters have had issues. Purolator had the filter elements blow apart... Purolator makes some of Toyota's "OEM" filters. Example Toyota part YZZG1 is made by Purolator YZZD1 is made by Denso. Both are OEM part numbers, made by different Companies.

Fram has had issues over the years, as has Penzoil, and many others.

I've run K&N filters for 300,000 of the 380,000 miles. I've never had a leak or an issue with a K&N oil filter. I've changed the oil at 3000 miles... and I have also let it go as far as 12,000+ miles between oil changes. Never a single issue.

What you are doing is using an example, that was identified by K&N, actually involved a recall, was just about completely limited to 1 or 2 part numbers, almost exclusively motorcycle oil filters, and happend, again, around 2016 and blowing it out of proportion to make yourself look like you're some authority.

The question was... how do you make it easier to get the oil filter in my 1st gen tacoma off... not what oil filter should I run on my race motorcycle.

The question was answered... not sure how to make it easier than putting a nut on the end of the oil filter.

In the process of dropping my trans to replace the pilot and throw out bearings. Figure since the shafts are coming off I should replace the carrier bearing I have sitting on the shelf. I am not sure if I should though it seems like this one still has a lot of life left?

I've done a mod or two
It's clearly designed to offset the vibrations of a candy caned driveshaft, innovation at its finest.
