What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Transmission back on, transfer case as well. LCE dual comp with a freshly surfaced flywheel in. Parts delays stopping me from going further

tomorrow start on valve cover gaskets and the timing belt

 

Hey guys what are you guys using for rear diff seal, RTV or gasket or both? Going to install rear diff with 5.29s this weekend…

 

My experience with pre-made gaskets has been terrible. Sealant all the way

 

We used the toyota fipg 103 sealant the last time. Worked great. No leaks.

 

I assume that is sold only at dealership?

 

You'd be fine with some Permatex Ultra grey or black too, can get either at the parts store.

 

Nice! Is there difference or preferred one?


Also what diff fluid are you guys using with Toyota LSD? Any recommendations?

 

I'd get the black for heavy oil stuff. I haven't had a Toyota with an LSD so I'll let someone else chip in there.

 

Don't you just use regular oil with a limited slip additive?

 

Yeah my previous taco had elocker, this diff has 5.29s paired with a yota LSD from a x-runner or something. I believe need to run diff fluid with an additive for LSD

 

So is it reg diff fluid with an additive or is it a diff fluid that already has the additive…

 

I've never run an LSD either. But you should be able to find 75w90 gear oil with friction modifiers already in it and any auto parts store.

 

Valvoline Synthetic 75W90 from the parts store comes with a LSD friction modifier in it. At least that's how the last 8ish quarts I bought were labeled.

 

What is the wire size on our harnesses. 16 or 18?

 

Are there LSDs that go into 1st gens? Everything I have seen online has been "universal" fit ones.

 

Good thing I’m doing the timing belt. Belt only has 7k on it. But the bastards at the dealer in Wisconsin put the washer on backwards and ate up a big chunk of the belt. Shits everywhere. So much fun

 

If you have the 8.4” diff the 1st gen tundra ones will fit. Factory, TRD or trutrac

Yea. I forget about those. But the trd sports with the lsd package have it too

 

I know @Speedytech7 already told me that the timing belt tensioner pulley shouldn't be low enough to touch the oil pump house but it's still stuck in my head.

@Empty_Lord hope you don't mine me snagging a screenshot of your photo but it was perfect for what I wanted to see

When I pulled my Tensioner pulley the piston part (not sure what to call it exactly ) was rubbing on the block side of the cylinder wall. I wouldn't think twice about it but the new Tentioner pulley rubbed the exact same way in a new oil pump until I used a copper washer to create a small gap and I filed the Tentioner piston down a little bit.


The other reason it keeps nagging the back of my mind was seeing timmy have issues with stripping the pulling bult in the timing belt video. It made me wonder if a similar bind is what caused it to be cross threaded to start with.

Probably way over thinking this still but I just want to see if anyone else has the same wear marks for the tensioner pulley.
