What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

One of the few places left where the locals actively hide places.

 

I’d reason that the climate being dry and usually no mud or salt in the southwest makes it possible for any polished metal surface to last longer - it sounds like you are particularly hard on the vehicle which I agree decreases the life of consumable components. Guys can get years out of open uniballs down here where they get thrashed in one winter anywhere north of Oregon.

was getting the P0136 code for the check engine light, so replaced the downstream o2 sensor. Cleared the code with my scanner and hopefully it doesn't come back!

 

Installed PSI fender flares to protect the fenders from rocks and road splash. This was especially important to me after installing the 1" wheel spacers all around.

The front pieces did not form to the body at the rear and at the lower end. Big gap down there. Will leave it for now and figure something out later on. A couple of screws on each side had to be drilled because they did not line up with any of the OEM holes.

I used a dremel cutting wheel to cut the lower rear edge so that it would slide over the OE mud flaps.

The rear pieces, OTOH, went really smoothly and lined up pretty well with the OEM plastic plugs.

Just uploaded the pics of the front rear arch showing the poor fit to the body and gap.

but are those nyloc nuts?

 

they’re whatever they had at the hardwear store; doubt they are stainless

 

The point is that the nylon will melt on your first drive, and the nuts will fall right off.

 

Eh they probably won't fall off, but yeah might smell bad for a drive or two before all the nylon melts out.

 

Ahh I see, Good to know, I'll swap them out

 

Didn't have any lock nuts that were not nylon at Home Depot so I did the double hex nut trick torqued to spec (but probably a littler over tightened)

 

Drove it back to San Diego from Sacramento today after visiting family for Christmas and Picked up my Corbeau brackets. Seats should be inbound soon..

 

Any idea what would be a direct replacement for these bolts? Dealership wants $50 for 4 bolts with nuts and washers...

 

That's now my issue as well.
Those front flares fit TERRIBLE on the back, that's a deal breaker for me. That would drive me nuts everytime I look at it.

 

Grade 8 3/8-24 nuts and bolts with a split washer or M10 Grade 10.9 - just measure for the length you need and if you can’t find the right thread pitch for the metric then buy nuts and a split washer for each too. You should be able to find them at big box or a good hardware store. McMaster Carr, Fastenal, or Grainger online too.

And that was the best fit I could get after spending about an hour trying to get a better lay of them. Once the front, center and portion to the rear lay tight to the fender, the lower rear won't tuck in.

I'll try to figure out a way to trim them out to something more tolerable.

I blasted him in eBay feedback so others will be aware and uploaded pics about the front flare fit but left a Neutral rating because the rears went so easy.

Using a heat gun and a dremel / grinder with a flap disk would be a way to get it to fit closer. Fiberglass and paint would probably be the best solution.

I did consider the heat gun and may go back to that idea and give it a try.

It looks to me like the front and rear flares are the same! Like they just labeled a rear flare as a front.

 

I don't think so because the front of the front flares fit excellently to the fender contour at the beginning of the flares.
