Correct. Recently I had to go up some Mountain passes for long stretches and temps got up to 245. I’m just curious if a stand alone Hayden cooler will keep the temps from getting that hot by itself. If it’s barely going to make a dent in times like that, then I’ll run it inline with the radiator. But if it tops out around 200, then I’d rather avoid possible pink milkshake and have peace of mind.

I’ll probably just have to see for myself and worst case, I can switch the plumbing.

In normal highway situations I rarely see mine get about 200 now. Even when pulling passes and even if it goes over that over 220 is reeeeaaallly rare and it cools fast.

245 is Hella hot. I've got the same cooler connected after the radiator and it's made a big difference. Are you turning OD off for those passes? That alone usually drops my temps a solid 10° instantly. If you're still getting hot try physically putting it in 2nd and that should keep it from getting too hot. I will pull off the road if my trans reaches 230.

The Hayden trans cooler really should help, it's well worth the cost and effort to install. It resolved my trans heating issues wonderfully (until I added the turbo).

Technically, any temperature is ruin the fluid hot - the question is how long you’re running it at that temp. Excessive heat is what breaks down hydraulic fluid (ATF, brake fluid, etc) and can cause component failure, but generally only if you operate the fluid beyond its capacity/lifespan at that temp. I have run ATF in excess of 300 degrees, but for a short period of time and with a fluid change shortly thereafter. I’ve never seen the inside of my old auto transmission, but I have it on good authority that it’s in excellent shape ;)

    upload_2024-8-28_14-0-42.png

I find that a yearly drain and fill (5 qts or so) keeps everything in good shape without having to worry too much about operating temperatures.

I have a Hayden 679 on mine, its basically 2 inches wider.
My cooling set-up is somewhat unique. I use a Koyorad performance aluminum radiator that has no provisions for the factory style cooler. To cool the transmission the fluid comes out to a Derale fluid control thermostat where if it is cold 90% of the fluid returns to the transmission, and as it starts to warm up, more, and more flows through the cooler, up until about 180 degrees where the thermostat is fully open. in line with the hot side, I also have a thermostatic switch that controls an electric fan that turns on at 190 degrees, and back off at 175 degrees.
My transmission will generally run at 165 degrees cruising down the road with the torque convertor locked up in direct, or overdrive, empty or loaded pulling a trailer, it gets up to about 190 in stop and go traffic, and maybe 215-225 loaded at low speed on hot days in the woods, and abusing it with full throttle pulls up Northwest passes.
In all of this the truck generally runs at 185 to 195 without the transmission causing the temprature to rise like it used to before the changes.
I live in Northwest Montana, and the only time I am concerned with it being to cold, or running to cold is the occasional week with night time lows gown to -20 or below, but those times I am not out driving around unless I have to.

At nearly 140,000 miles, my '98 2wd std with the 2.4 developed a minor coolant leak at the left (driver's side) front.
Reservoir and radiator didn't show any real loss of coolant yet, but each time I moved the truck, a new puddle would appear.
As I'm taking a 1,000mi road trip in 2 weeks, to bring my daughter and her stuff to college, I need to nip this in the bud.
Took it down to the dealer, where they ran a pressure test. Cracked radiator. OE is back-ordered, so they swapped in an OEM unit. $850 later, she's good as new. Well, good as 26 years old with fully functioning components. Only other item on the inspection was dirty brake fluid, so I had that flushed and replaced as well.
Everyone at the dealership loves seeing my nearly-stock '98 5MT on 27x8.5 AT's over the factory steelies. Even though the exterior is pretty rough up close, it still looks good. When they do the cursory "body damage here" diagram, they circle the front, the entire driver side, and half the passenger side... But it's mostly minor scratches.
Got compliments on the clutch action this time.

What temps are you typically running at with the koyo radiator? Saw one for sell in my area for new. I have a cheap rad right now and it runs almost 10 degrees hotter than my previous Denso one did.

Got the transfer case seals done. Timmy mentioned a washer behind the stake nut but I never saw one so whoever was in there last didn't use it or maybe the front just doesn't have one idk but it's back together and topped off

That little seal in the companion flange was super easy, I was able to just push it into place by hand.

But not the first time I've opened up automatic transmissions. That thing was clean. There wasn't even the usual smokey looking haze of clutch dust in the valve body passages. Not a bit of varnish from cooked fluid

Yeah you got that right. Apparently the difference between one that's going out and one that's in great condition is mostly aesthetic.
