Started to (try to) paint my rims today. Popped off the center caps, went to the car wash and scrubbed the rims as well as I could there. Came home, cleaned them with purple degreaser cleaner. Started to (unsuccessfully) mask off the tires and noticed it was looking like rain...welcome to Florida, wait five minutes and the weather changes. Was having a tough time masking, so gave up on the prospect of spraying them today. So, now I'm on my patio spraying the center caps (after a thorough cleaning in the bathroom sink). Thinking of doing something different with the Toyota logo in the centers...once the graphite dries and before I put the clear coat on them.

On a side note, I always thought the design on those center caps look like snowflakes :p :anonymous:

A lot of people just stick index or playing cards between the rims and tires and don't bother masking them off at all.

Reid, how's the paint holding up on your rims?

Yeah, I tried with a set of playing cards...barely could get them wedged between rim and tire...then attempted to tape the outer edge of them to newspaper around the rest...that's when I failed. I guess that the cards alone might be enough...a little overspray on the tires won't hurt...especially since it's so dark and I'll be getting better ones soon enough. Now that it looks like rain though, I'll have to put it off for another day since I'm painting them while on the truck outside.

And here's what the center caps look like at the moment...I'm really digging this color! Like I said, I'm going to highlight the Toyota logo somehow, then put the clearcoat on them.

When I paint my wheels I plan on doing the card trick (no pun intended) and wrapping the tire in cellophane.

I really like that graphite color. I think on a lighter colored vehicle graphite wheels would look amazing.

They're holding up great! Just went out to take these:

They lost a little bit of that shine as when I first painted them, but to me they still look great.

Okay, so here's the center caps with the logo highlighted.

Center caps with center highlight by Kathy / Analog Soul Photography, on Flickr

Kinda sucks because I tried at first with a metallic marker which didn't work at all. So I ran to Advance Auto Parts and picked up a touch up paint that looked close enough to my Lunar Mist color (they seemed to be out of stock of the actual match from the reference book). It ended up being a great match, but it must be old because it was coming out kinda gunky. My results are pretty screwy closeup on the center caps, but I figure they won't be viewed too closely by anyone but me or they'll be moving, so doesn't matter that much. But I got it done anyway and proceeded to touch up every rock chip on my truck...and I'm going to return the paint to the store because it's so bad.

And FYI, this is the touchup color that matches Lunar Mist very well:

Went to change my Spark Plugs today, and when I removed the coil from the front right cylinder, the wires tore. Same on the other 2 on the driver's side. Changed those and put in new (NGK) wires. Haven't done the passenger side, REALLY hope those don't get messed up as well, as the boots are much more expensive than a $35 wire set for the passenger side...

I like it better without the initial shine quite honestly.

It was Rustoleum high performance enamel, correct?

They're matte black with no clear coat. No primer used either. Get down into the material as best as you can with sanding, clean, then paint ;)

    This is what I used...
