Our cabs are so small, I can't imagine putting a 12 in there.

I can't wait to get my 8" sub installed. It's perfect for these trucks and 90% of the music I listen to.

    just an FYI

The higher frequencies are much worse for ear health when listened to at higher volumes than the lower frequencies.

That said, if you're cranking the shit out of your system and boom the piss out of a tiny cab all day... then you're not doing your ears any favors whatsoever.

I had two 12's in my 96 at one point. They were very cheap though, but still sounded decent compared to some other's systems because they knew absolutely nothing about tuning amps.

I ended up blowing the amp hooked to the two 12's, so I sold the subs and bout a systems with four 10's in a custom box on a 1200rms amp. WAY overkill, but when they could do anything I wanted from country to so much bass you could barely breathe inside the truck haha

I'd definitely say that one 10" sealed or ported sub in our trucks would be perfect. I don't know much about 8's, because everybody that got 8's back in high school got them because they were so cheap, so they sounded almost like mids they were so bad haha

I think I've lost some hearing due to my four 10's.... Never turn them up so loud that they use all of the air in the cab, it doesn't feel good.... Haha

I won't pretend to be an audiophile but a few guys I talked to said that a high quality 8 would be perfect for our trucks.

Rick at raamaudio spent a lot of time talking to me about it. I'm pretty sold on an Arc Audio 8 that I will try to work into my rear passenger cubby space. Not ideal, but good enough for me.

    I agree 100%.

I've always been a big fan of free air speakers so I still had my trunk space to haul stuff.

Back in "the day" I had three 12" MTX Eliminators in my my Nissan Sentra. We measured the SPL at 118db. Decent for my little car. Freakin loud and in retrospect way boomy. I loved it.

After I totaled that car and I got a Toyota Corolla (the makes of these cars are inconsequential, I'm just reminiscing), I put in two 10" Pioneers. That was roughly 1992. In 2000 I bought a new Honda Civic and had my stereo guy move my 10's over to it. 13 years later I still have the same car with the same 10" speakers.

Money was no object with my Toy when I started doing things to it. And what did I put in? A 10" in a box. I've had both worlds, and 10's are the sweet spot. In a properly tuned box, they can hit hard and go way low. So low in fact that I'm still caught off guard sometimes. There's a song by Pink (Slut Like You @ 2:23) that I thought was going to cause the speaker to rip itself out of the box and go flying over my shoulder. It was glorious. :D

Yeah, but it's awesome, no? My stereo guy had a demo van in which he built a wall of boxes. Four 15" and four 12" Cerwin Vegas with 2000 watts driving them.

He blew the windshield out once and had to silicone it back in. You couldn't sit in it and drink a glass of water. Throat. Wouldn't. Work.

    Sigh...good times, good times. :)

hearing loss as nothing to do with frequency. It has to do with SPLs. you just start to show hearing loss by loosing the upper freq first.

    for instance:

Hate to break it to you but most concerts these days are at around 105-110 db-a. Thats 105-110 db average over about 10 mins so could be as high as 115 and low as 95 in some parts. (this may seem like a small number difference but dB is logarithmic, so a little change is HUGE)

Either way, you only need to sit there for 2 mins of so without ear protection, and you have irreversible ear damage. there is NO cure for hearing loss, and hearing aids only go so far and suck.

here is a okay chart for some common sound sources

Protect your hearing guys..once its gone..its gone forever.
