What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

198-202* is pretty much normal for mine. Large swings in temps might indicate some trapped air in the system.

This is exactly what happened to me after I had the dealer do the water pump and timing belt. Same exact temps you describe. The heater is way too freakin hot now but I have to keep it on or my UG shows 210 sometimes 212. Not sure what's up.

Hmmmm.. yeah I was running around 193* or so before iirc. Weird that the book says to check drive belt tension. Wonder if it's too tight. I don't even see how that could affect it tho. Unless they mean if it's loose and slipping. Idk. It's like 50* out right now. I let it idle first for quite a while then took it for a drive. It stayed at a stead 208 most of the time. It went up to 210 after I ran her hard for a little stretch. Idk I'll see tomorrow on my drive to work and see how she does. Thanks again for all yalls help I'll keep u posted on my temps.

 

You've heard of idiot lights, right? The temp gauge in a Tacoma is an idiot gauge.

 

Before changing mine it ran at 199-204 consistently. After the change it's in the 208-210 range pretty much all the time. Unless I get on the throttle heavy, then it drops to 194. But it spikes to 212 if I'm on a flat highway stretch for a while.

 

Yeah, I've never seen mine go above the "just a hair under middle". Even when wheeling uphill stuff in 100* weather.

Only time I've seen a Tacoma gauge go above middle is when I overheated my 96 from mud caked on the radiator...

 

So I washed and quick waxed the truck for show and tell with the potential new buyer. We are meeting in a day or two




I also took a vacation to Indiana to go bow hunting on a farm that friends of my family owned. Me, my wife, and my son took the Civic, but I got to follow my dads sexy DC red first gen the whole ride

Does the FSM say anything about what temp t-stat was standard?

I seem to recall, that all the 1st gen Tacomas delivered to the Port of Portland were spec'd with a 10* higher t-stats that those delivered to desert climes. I'm pretty sure we installed a 190* unit with the new water pump and t-belt on mine.

 

Oh for realz!? Damnit. I read the book and it freakin said up and at no more than a 15* angle. Maybe I misread it. Bummer. Well that should be it then!! Yeah it seemed like it took a long ass time for the stat to open. Well I'll have to swap er around then probly Turkey day. Thank god I can easily do that!! Took me two days to get that shit done. Granted I took my sweet as time. Just got done cleaning up outside. Phew. Well now that I've done this job, I feel much better Better about my mechanical skills Learned a lot.
Man I can't believe how much smoother she runs. Crazy. And glad I got that God awful water pump bearing racket/rattle/squeal gone. Doesn't sound like she's dying anymore. Ha.

Interesting. Not sure how important 10* is, but it may be that harsher winters temps need it.

 

I just realized too, although I doubt it matters on the temp, but I'm using he torque app and I forgot I had it set up to my mom's 94 t100 2.7 when I was troubleshooting codes. But again I don't think it matters. anyone have any input that knows how the torque app works? I just started using it so I don't know much. I assume the temp it's showing can only show what the sensor is sending regardless of vehicle specs.

 

Oh yeah, I forgot. My truck never leaves it's heated garage either. mr. moscow

need help with amount of oil in rear diff. alldatadiy says:

2.7 qt short wheel base
3.1 qt extra long wheel base

didnt know there were different wheelbases? could someone check their fsm for me?

 

Should be 3.1 qt IIRC

 

Just fill till it starts coming out.
