What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

cool, good choice. But don't expect 50k out of them. Unless you're nice to them. 30-40k is do able though.

I'm getting about 20 on highway and 17 in town with lots of stop lights. They are 33x12.50x15. The Toyos are super heavy man. You will feel the extra weight of them

 

So a while back this happened:



Lots of fun wood working and whatnot. Super nice to still be able access everything and sleep in the back without much hassle, but it promtly killed the 16 year old suspension and cupped up my tires.

New shocks were the recommendation, so about two months ago that happened, but the leafs were still unhappy...


Replaced the leaf packs with intent on adding a leaf at the same time, two weeks ago, but got the wrong leaf, wouldn't fit into the pack, so I returned it and got the correct one.

Time constraints meant driving like this for about two weeks. New everything meant a super soft luxury ride that made the taco feel like a Caddy. Which would be great... if I owned a Caddy.

So I was scheduled to visit some friends this weekend with the primary goal of having my trusty, handy dandy Toyota expert show me the way around the timin' belt swap.



That only took the morning, he has done "a few" of these before so it was quick and I learned plenty, so we pressed on to do the add a leaf in the afternoon...



Brake lines were limiting us so for the ease of things we detached and let them bleed, later flushing the lines out, as well as removing the drive shaft. Then we were free to move the axel around as we pleased.

So 13 hours later, we got a lot of work done for one Saturday:

Replaced:

Timing belt (and associated pulleys and tensioner)
Water pump
Coolant
Oil and filter
Spark plugs
Brake fluid
All three serpentine belts

Then of course the leaf addition. She's a whole lot stiffer now, no Cadillac ride.



Her ass is a little high but won't be when I sleep back there with all the gear for the weekend in there too, and should settle after a few miles. But the leafs are smiling again...



Thank God for friends that are willing to help with this stuff, and just so happen to have a garage full of snap-on tools!

 

I added a custom made add a leaf i made from the main spring on my old factory pack. It went on as the third leaf to make a 5 leaf pack.

What do you use for your cushion? just egg foam?

 

That's great gas mileage for 33s. Wonder what my truck will do with 32s

Hmmmm maybe, I'm actually looking a little more towards the Discover STT pro but I think I'm getting the KM2s

Getting close to time for new tires, should I get the KO2 or duratrac?
I currently have BFG KO's and they do OK, but not great, here in the south I do a lot of wet weather driving and theres a good bit of mud at the job sites I go to.

 

I would go with duratrac. I like how the tread is

 

Thats how I'm leaning, it's a very aggressive AT that should cope with mud better, but my dad (Who is buying the tires) is a diehard KO fan, he has the KO2's on his f250 and they are OK, but not great.

 

Why not try the KM2's?

 

More expensive than either (By ~$40 a tire), and I don't need an MT, just an aggressive AT.
If I get the KO2's I may end up getting a pair of treadwrights for the front or something and putting them on when I know its gonna be muddy.
