What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Sheesh. Alla sudden everybody has them. I don't remember anybody talking about them. Also like half the stuff I look at getting for the front driveline says "not compatible with manual hubs".

 

Cause. Who wants to get out of their truck and engage 4wd when you can just pull a lever?

Frozen hubs suck too.

Oh and the cvs are weaker..

And you can't run tundra cvs with manual hubs...not without doing surgery to them anyways.

 

Spline count is different for the cvs.

 

Only the out splines. And the wheel bearings are different too I think.

 

Yea. But that's why a lot of stuff isn't compatible. The whole spindle hub assemble is different.

 

What hubs would work with the OEM setup.

I should know what that is...is that a locking differential system for the front like the one on the rear?

 

Sorta. It's engages 4wd. Not a locking diff. All hubs and the like are the same as long as they aren't manual there isn't any difference.

The add actuators can be different but that's it really.

How do you go about adding ADD? I don't see anything on TW or Google.

 

If you don't have manual hubs now, then you have an Automatic Disconnect Deferential (ADD) system. It is one or the other.

 

How have things been for you Mike? Haven't seen you post on here in a long time.

 

Ok so that's just 4H on the shifter i guess.

That's all I really need just now. I remember liking the manual hubs on my 88 so I could put it in front wheel drive (like i need that when??) and also so I could run with the front differential connected once in a while without going into 4WD to keep it on good condition. Also the manual hubs were apparently more bulletproof than the electronic system I heard.

Few minor things tonight. Few parts off the bed. Cleaned up the frame mounts, and used the rattle can to paint all that white area black.

 

You aren't keeping up with maintenance if your hubs are freezing. Mine were completely sealed since 1995 until this August and they were perfectly clean and free of grime or water. Plus its nice to not wear my CVs out daily driving.

Kinda sad that they'll have to go when my plans come to fruition though.

 

oh yeah that was the other cool thing about them. that would be super nice

 

it's been painful...

 

the automatic lever pull locking hubs are very reliable, that is why its not such a popular mod.. there is no need most of the time...
