k so i have a great chance at getting a winch from HF for very cheap and was wondering what lbs rating should i look for like a 8k,9k or what? are these any good as i can get it for less then $200 right now.. yes it will be going on a prerunner. my daughters BF gave me a coupon code for 25% all purchased items for a family and friend event going on right now.. so id like to use it for this and some other stuff the CC is paid off and i have a hole in my pocket right now lol

On the front page, there's a coupon for that winch: $249.99. A lot of times, they'll even apply that 25% off on top of the coupon price.

That's what I'm saying $187+tax isn't that bad I just don't want to buy one use it once and it burns up on me is all...
I have been on a few trails that I just can't make it up this short little hill but after that I'd be perfectly fine for wheeling and I thought this might help out in those situations for sure.thats what my buddy did on his Ford ranger edge that's 2wd..

I've got the 8k HF winch on my car hauler. It will pull cars up locked in gear. The tires are just skidding up the ramps. I've had it 10 years or so. If it dies tomorrow, ill put another one on.

Ill most likely put a 6 or 4k on the next time. The 8k is just a waste of power if its not needed.

For an extra $30 you can get the replacement warranty.

Test that bitch to failure and get it replaced.

A cheap $200 winch sounds great until it fails on you and you need to pay a tow truck $1000 for an extraction.

There's some things going cheap on is fine. A thing to get you outta shit when you're miles away from any help is not that thing. IMO.

Yeah cheap recovery equipment makes about as much sense as bargain bin first aid.

That's not realistic. You should not be wheeling alone. 2 winch failures is very unlikely.

Id bet there are more winch failures from not being used.

Most winch failures will be control issues. If you can't hot wire a winch, you should learn how.

You should be able to rely on your equipment. If everybody has the mentality of "somebody else will get me out" then everybody is fucked.

Yeah we would be bringing someone with a good winch for sure.
Super easy... but knowing HF crap, a field winding would be shorted or one of the powdered gears they use would have shed it's teeth.

If I get so stuck that a HF winch can't get me out, I really made some bad decisions.

Regardless, buy what you want. I just figured we all hung out here in the first gen section because we were cheap and had good taste:)

Realistically you shouldn't be relying on your winch to get out of a sticky situation if you are in fact solo wheeling. Can it potentially make the recovery process much faster? Yes. But if you are stuck because you are high centered your high lift and shovel can help you just as well, it will just take longer. If you are stuck in mud while solo wheeling though, you probably shouldn't have been going through that mud.

What is the point? Im betting that's made over seas as well.

Sorry, I don't see $175 more reliability with that winch.

I'd imagine if it was functioning it would be fine, probably under what it's rated at but fine. But I wouldn't trust it as a main piece of recovery gear. At best it should be used as something people leave on a loading dock or a trailer. There's a difference between being cheap and careless.
