What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I need to do this. Got alot of play with mine

 

Went fishing this weekend after jerky run.

 

I would say you need a new one. Funny, I was going thru my parts drawer 40 minutes ago. I got a brand new one sitting there ready if mine fails.

What I really want to know is WTF next vid that pops up after yours plays. I took a screen shot, but am way too afeared to play it.

Will a bad carrier bearing cause a vibe at high speed?

A bad CB will sound much like a bad wheel bearing. The only difference, is it will be hard to pin point.

If you keep changing your mind on which side of the truck has a bad bearing, it's a good chance its the CB.

 

A bad CB radio will howl like that?

 

I don't have any howling. Or any sound that I can tell, but there's quite a bit of play, should there be any up and down play on the CB?

 

There should be play in the rubber support. The drive shaft moves around quite a bit as you go thru gears.

Yours looks to have a tear in the top of the bearing support. This doesn't mean you have a bad bearing, just a bad bearing support. This should not cause a constant vibration.

Unfortunately, you can't buy those part a separate. They come as a package.

 

So you would suggest just change the whole assembly? It seemed like it had a lot of play, so there's no way to tell just by moving it up and down if it needs replacement?

 

It will rot out completely in the near future. Might as well change it. You might get lucky and this is what is causing the vibe.

Just make sure when you take the 2 piece drive shaft apart and change the CB bearing, use lock tite on the bolt threads.

 

I drove across the country a couple times with my XR500 on a hitch carrier (350+lbs. including carrier) and had no problems. Drove non-maintained highways in Utah, went through the CO Mts in a blizzard, plenty of potholes, bouncing, braking, and BS. Only problem I ever had was ratchet straps breaking. Get new straps every year!

I would also agree with what was previously posted about getting a trailer if you have the space for it. It's a very useful investment!

Mine did the same thing when it went out, yours definitely need replaced.

Yes same play, mine was making a bad clunking noise too, little vibration. When we took it off it was definitely junk.

No i think it was a dorman brand. Got it from napa I'm pretty sure. It was easy, some people were saying you needed a press to press something off or on.... can't remember, but everything came off and went on without a press.
