What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I installed air bumps last night:

 

Magna does make a bigger one..haha Probably be a little louder than stock.

Wait till there is less glass in it. Frank has gotten loud haha my Moms taco had a 14'' one that wasn't muffling anything anymore..even louder haha

 

Did your 18" dump before the axle or after it?

 

I'm assuming from when you rolled? Did it break off or what? Was always considering putting one in mine for convenience getting in and out and something to grab on in off camber situations other than the wheel, but not if it's a potential risk in rollover since I feel like I would instinctively grab for it.

 

I run the flow master 13.5". Probably sounds about like the manga flow?

When I went to go check out exhausts before I welded them on I held each up to listen an all the shop had was the huge magnaflow so I went flowmaster

 

No i broke my hand two days before i rolled it from my steering wheel spinning my hand into it.

and my experience is that flowmaster sounds nothing like magnaflow. They have a very different sound. seem to be usually much louder and throatier sounding i guess..hard to describe. Their performance is also not supposed to be very great..lots of people call them chokemasters. but i've never ran one personally to say if that is true or not.

 

I don't think my 18" chopped is as loud as yours or Frank's 14" piped. It's certainly not louder. Mine is dumped after the axle so about 18-24" more pipe out the back.

FWIW, I have ~75K miles on my 18" magnaflow and still waiting for it to get louder. It is no louder now than it was when I first installed it. Maybe it's only 14s that get louder.

 

Hmm. When I got the truck it had a flowmaster on it but was many many years old and trashed.

I've never heard a shorter magnaflow so that's why I asked if the shorter ones sound similar to the same length flowmasters.

In the shop I believe I listened to the 18" magnaflow An didn't seem that throaty or loud for that matter. May just be me though

 

Finished building my retrofits the other day. I had no idea what it was like being able to see at night haha

 

Ben's 18 was louder to him in the cab because it was chopped right by the cab. I remember the in cab drone was awful.

Mine has definetly gotten louder over the years. Idk how many miles are on it, not 75k though. But i also know Frank sees 4000rpms a lot more then your truck..might contribute there..

the 18'' isn't very loud, but very pleasant sounding. adds a nice growl to the truck without being shouty.

negative ghost rider. I do not have 3'' exhaust.

Mine is 2.5'' to a 3'' tip though from the muffler. Probably explains the added loudness compared to yours and i think mine is a bit deeper too. But mine is older too and again, see 4000rpms a lot. Especially after the regear.

 

What diameter oval are you guys running?

Sounds like if I get the bigger 5x8" oval in 18", and pipe it to the back, it will work for what I want. Also, any real difference between 2.5" and 2.25"? What slips easier onto our stock tubing?

 

Do you need the handle or the a-pillar piece? If yours is tan I can look for mine, if I can find them you can have them

 

You prolly don't have it anymore, but the flared end on the stock pipe fits perfectly into the 2.5" , and then the stock pipe fits into the flared end.

 

I think mine is the smaller oval..but not 100% certain. I can check on Saturday if you want. Going to powell this weekend.

Stock tubing is..well metric i think. So 2.25'' is pretty close to it. But i didn't weld mine up so i couldn't say..

True there is only one Cat. That does make a difference.

But considering im at 3300rpm on the highway, id say Frank has spend a lot more time in the higher rpms then your rig purely because of the gearing.

i thought you copied mine exactly so you got 2.5'' pipe too??

 

My 18" is the 4x9 oval, 2.5"/2.5" Center in/Center out. As Brett indicated, the 2.5" opening slides easly over the stock pipe. Makes it easy to weld on.

edit: full disclosure. I did not install it myself. Had a shop do it.

Yea i love the sound and the pop/burbles/backfires. Doesn't help with driving slow...but neither does a manual anyways..ha

I'll never forget leaving coeur d'alene with him on the interstate in front of me and we hit that big long hill. And he starts to slow and i tell him to just down shift already on the CB...and i didn't have too. Accelerated up the hill.
