My front differential never came with a breather and I wanted to extend my rear one up to the gas tank filler cap.

I totally forgot, which one is which?

    IMG_6195.jpg

Totally confused on how the top one works. It's just a hallow tube with no cap on it. I believe the top one is for the rear.

Well the bottom one is threaded so that wouldn't work. Never seen the top one before, mine just looked like both of those combined lol

you're going to want 90930-03136, which has a nipple for the hose and a closed breather like the bottom one.

have you ever set gears before? DO you have extra washer plates for the rear?

You need a 90 degree micrometer for the front. Its a major bitch to get it set right. I HIGHLY recommend having a pro do them if you never have. NOT a first time project or even an intermediate one.

top tube goes in the clamshell. Then a small piece of tube runs to a hard line on the diff.

    as seen here:

[IMG]Front Locker-11.jpg by Monte Nickles Photos, on Flickr

the blue tube is covering most of it.

Or you can see it here in the middle.

The bottom...not sure. I mean its the actual breather. But i didn't think it threaded in. But there is a tube that is supposed to run up the driver wheel well that the tcase and front diff breather mount to.

How did I not see that... I completely did not realize that's what that looked like. I was looking for the actual breather cap that terminates that line.

Guess I'm making another order, lol. Think I can still make use of the bottom one?

The bottom is just the stock breather that does thread into the rear diff, its not necessary to extend the front breather any right? Its already about as high as the intake if Im not mistaken.

Has anyone ever had a problem with the stock rear breather being rusted and breaking off when trying to swap it out? I’ve had bad luck with that and imagine it’d be a pain to fix.

Finally got some time today to upload a few pics from last weekends trip. So I've got Dakars and 5100s and the ride is pretty shitty. What would you guys recommend to upgrade? 5125s and maybe relocating my shocks? Still have some axle wrap too that I'd like to fix.

It's pretty high. So not really. Can help to swap to a nice filter vs a 1 way check valve so it won't puke up fluid all the time.

Would it be easy to add a locker to my Prerunner? It's not a TRD so I have a plain ol' Prerunner

    That's a loaded question.

You can add several kinds to it.

    By yourself?

    Ehhh...

Not the easiest thing. Some are some are definitely not.

That said. Adding 4wd will be much more beneficial then a locker.

There are a few. Auto locker/mechanical basically replace the spider gear or the full ring carier. These require no wiring and no activation from a switch or anything. Most work when you are applying power, the diff is locked. As in if you are pressing the accelerator, it's locked. If you are coasting its not locked. Kind of handy as you never have to worry about if it is on or off. However, you have to change your driving habits on asphalt a bit otherwise you chirp the tires and bind through all the corners. Detroit makes probably the nices version of this and Lockright is the cheapest option and fairely easy to install as well.

Selectable lockers are lockers you have a switch in the cab and push a button to lock it. There are two main kinds, air locker and electronic. The stock OEM e locker Toyota sold with the truck uses an external actuator to slide a pin in to lock the diff. Its not always instantaneous and can be finicky to get unlocked occasionally. The external actuator can also corrode. This diff is NOT compatible with your open diff housing. It uses a totally separate housing with a different mounting pattern and the ring gear is ever so slightly smaller then your open diff and there are other difference. To run this you have to find a complete axle. If you do, it swaps right over and then you just wire up a switch, all elocker housings are 4.10 ratio.

Harrop released a new elocker last year. Basically they took the design that Eaton and Toyota developed for the 3rd gen tacomas and made one for our diffs as well. It uses an internal electro magnet to do the locking. Is always instant and very strong. Has a neat feature where if the direction is reverse, it temporally unlocks to relieve axle bind. As in if your climbing a hill, and can't make it and roll backwards a bit to give it another go, it unlocks for a split second saving your axles from a lot of stress. This locker is cream of the crop right now and also...really expensive. 1350 bucks for just the locker, not installed. It's not super popular because of the price.

Arb makes the air lockers that fit in our trucks. This takes either an air compressor or CO2 to actuate the locker. You run an air line to the diff and the pressure slides the mechanism over to lock it. The RD129 is the model for your rear diff and usually runs around 900 bucks but you can find them on sale for around 800 often. Harrop argues that theirs are cheaper as you don't need OBA...but i argue that you should have OBA anyways so its a better investment. Air lines can get ripped off though and leak.

Either way, the ARB is a tried and true one and the Harrop would be baller. Im a big fan of selectable lockers as the truck drives normal unless you decide to lock it. Plus your open diff, also know as the Toyota "8.4" diff(its still an 8'' ring, but due to it being slightly larger then the 8'' elocker, the name kinda stuck to differentiate between the two), is a stronger diff due to the pinion bearings and the ring gear caps.

    Whew.

That was long. Hope thats a little helpful. That's kinda the basic run down.

Don’t think So. Just a 2.7 regular cab 96. A plain Jane model. Stick shift.
