The valley is pretty inhospitable but our vehicles do fine, northern AZ has it made, cooler weather and seasons. I don't think Flagstaff salts the roads either when it snows, just sand.

I find it funny that it took four major gauge makers to put together the OEM cluster. VDO must be the designer, Toyota for the values and logic, and I'm sure Yazaki Meter actually made it. Not sure what Sheldahl is contributing though...

It's worth mentioning this meter worked too so maybe you have the wrong value sheet?

That’s bizarre. That data sheet came from the 2000 FSM. Could it have been that Toyota has different resistance values over different model years?

I’m stumped. I know the fuel sender is fine, the fuel float on both assemblies displayed the proper resistances according to the same PDF that diagram came for. The readings for the meter are all completely off.

Honestly I think you likely have a ground fault given the grounding history of your five lug. Check the grounds on the intake plenum, they're the gauge grounds, also worth checking the ones behind the drivers kick panel, there are three ground junctions back there.

The gauge itself doesn't need to be connected to the truck's electrical system to test for resistance, right? I was testing the fuel sender outside the truck and it had the correct electrical values.

What year truck is your cluster from?

Maybe you can chime in @mechanicjon

My gauge is from a 96, I have the early Taco FSM open right now looking for those tests, it isn't searchable tho so it might take a min

This is from the early FSM, still doesn't seem right but who knows, my sending unit in the tank worked for the 95 and 96 gauge and the 96 gauge worked, maybe it needs more forward current for an accurate test

I think you have a completely different gauge than me. Look at the bolt pattern of where it mounts to the flexible circuit board. Something had to have changed during the 1998 revision.

Well then... looks like I need to get my hands on another used cluster.

84 on the no tach version looks awfully close to what you're getting...
I would test the other letters and see if they are also close to the no tach version.

I've had the FSM be incorrect before. When measuring the door lock actuator the numbers never matched up.

Yours must have been ruined by all that hot, dry California weather. Electronics don't like it when it gets too hot and dry. If you lived somewhere where it snowed once in a while it might still work. :luvya:

California gauges are known to cause cancer so it probably just died.

Everything known to the State of California causes cancer. Im starting to wonder if we stop letting California know about things, would it stop cancer?

I’d rather Flinstone my Tacoma and cut a hole in the floor than live in the salt belt.

Come to think of it, if I lived in the salt belt I wouldn’t even need to cut a hole because the rust would do it for me.
