What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Thats where Im at. 2 years for a set of tires.

If he isn't getting out to just test the waters as it is..no point in getting a locker.

Seriously. All the stuff I've done..95% of it is without a locker. Actually probably more. I've only had a locker in Frank for 2 years and he's only been road worth for like 2 trips with it. And even then I've used it like 3 times.

Just pick you line and keep moving. Work most the time. Granted Im not doing Cliffhanger or something(yet) but you can do A LOT of stuff without a locker.

 

Yeah, its nice for sure, but I rarely use it unless I absolutely have to. You can break shit if you dont use them correctly. And the right line and a rear locker is all you really need. But yeah Ive been high centered on rocks and the front got me out easy as the flip of a switch

 

I’ve onyl had one set of tires last more than a year... have been getting about 20kish out of them, I must have bad habits

I suppose you're right. I've never had very long commutes, nor did my father when he owned the truck. When I got the truck in 2015, it only had 75,000 miles and the tires were almost ten years old. I put about 30k on it since, I'm sitting at 101,000 miles. My commute used to be 15 minutes each direction, and then I moved to San Francisco and I don't commute at all anymore. Just sits in the parking garage till I need to go get groceries or do stuff on the weekend.

I heard the KO2's are terrible tires, but the tread will last forever. I like 'em, but I'll definitely be getting better tires the next go-around. If 4.88 sounds the best, then 4.88 it shall be.

 

I guess I should add I’ve ever really actually gone all the way through 1 set.

I don't, but since I'm paying money to re-gear the thing already it's now or never.

And I do plan on using this truck off-road more, contrary to popular belief.

 

The newer trucks flash the check engine light?

That must get annoying really fast.

 

I didnt wheel much in college. After, it increased a lot.

I rarely ever use mine.

The only time I’ve actually really thought it’s set me ahead is when I’m chained up, and it’s not needed there either.

 

Yours does too if you have a misfire, anything that does major cat damage flashes it

 

I thought that if its flashing its an indication that something more severe is happening

 

Using it more doesn't mean you need a locker.

Let me say this once and for all, since Monte has said it a hundred times.

The rig he uses to off-road, Igor, has no lockers. Trust me when I say that he does more extreme off-roading then you will with this truck.

You can spend the money on the lockers and try and justify it, but know that you are doing it not for capability but instead just to say you have them.

Edit: and Monte, just so you don't get too big of head, this is like your 4th and 5th and 6th Tacoma's - you want them but don't need them

 

I do live in the middle of a big city, so it doesn't help my case. Haha.

I seriously do plan on using it more. I'll be honest, it took me this long to finally go off-roading because none of my friends drive 4WD vehicles. I mean, I found @Sperrunner and we went last week, but he's a 2WD lifted S-Runner and I was limited to where his truck could go.

 

I did not know that, that is interesting.

 

I don't think I'll ever need a front locker, but a rear locker would be nice to have.

I totally didn't need 4WD, and look what happened to my truck. Haha.
