Overlander-- (noun) an individual who buys overpriced gear, doesn't change his/her own oil and lacks basic common sense offroad knowledge.

For me the biggest frustration with this fad is the ignorance that comes with it.

Yeah, I put a winch , but I'm embarrassed to say that it's been in the bumper for more than a year and I still haven't wired it up or spooled the line. Also, if I can make a suggestion, get the winch before you settle on all your measurements and start assembly. I went by online schematics and built the pocket bigger than I actually needed. If I had the winch on hand ahead of time, I could've gotten the whole bumper a bit tighter to the body.

Sure. Least they could be consistent about it though.

See that's the real problem with "over landing" now. Is it's a "flexible" definition due to companies marketing as one try to cash in on the fad. Now just normal camping or rock crawling trail days are "overlanding". Which to me is not true. A weekend camp trip..is a camp trip. Trail riding is trail riding. Overlanding is getting from point A to point B on remote roads and trails while avoiding as much contact with civilization as possible over the course of a week or longer to explore and be enveloped in nature.

    But whatever..what do I know

Bingo. Everyone wants to do it while not really getting the point. Instead it's become money spending contest which makes people feel they need gear XYZ before doing anything when really you could do it in a stock 1986 Toyota truck.

The commercialization of it is what is hurting it. Not gonna kill it but not helping it as much either.

You’re spot on. I have a bed platform setup in my truck but I don’t consider myself an overlander. I just camp a lot it’s nice sleeping in the truck instead of a tent. Last year I camped 35-40 weekends

    What’s your definition of “off-roading”?

    Anything off pavement? 2 track?

Everyone always has a different answer

Offroading is a pretty broad word for me. There are many "styles" and "types" that all live under the word offroading. Almost by law any road not paved is off-road. Ha. Which in some ways is very true. Just dirt roads can be rough and dangerous at speed and rattle your truck apart. Few thousand miles of that hurts any vehicle.

Used to be a bit snobby about what offroading was. Like if you don't need 4lo it was offroading. Not true though. Offroading to me now is any travel over unmaintained roads or trails or any road with adverse conditions(sudden flooding, sudden mud, washed out from rain, ect). Or trail or whatever. There's too many kind of offroading to have a clear definition. It has to be broad as there's so many different ways to do it and enjoy it.

Overlanding; to me it seems just like any other in a long list of niche scenes to go mainstream.

Whether it’s craft brewing, hardcore or punk rock music scenes, skateboarding or overlanding to name a few that I’ve seen.

There was a small diehard dedicated base that practiced it regularly and seriously then it somehow became popular to everyone. The purists see people invading the scene but not doing it properly (unused rotopax, unskated Airwalks) and it gets frustrating.

Eventually the fad dies, people are on to the next big thing and it leaves the niche scene no worse for the wear. If nothing else, should be some expensive overland crap selling cheap at some point in the future.

Nice, Thanks for the advice and I got a which im working around. Its the XRC8, I am making the opening a little bigger just incase I will upgrade to the 9.5k winch in the future. I'm probably going to mess around with the design a little before I get to the actual welding.

I agree and I disagree I suppose. I like to think the definition should be reserved and kept "pure" for the more romantic idea of getting away from it all for weeks at a time, but the reality is that most people can't afford to do that. And on one hand I think by fighting the idea that a more 'average' weekend warrior can't be involved in the hobby in his/her own way, it casts a shadow of snobby exclusivity over it which to me is just as annoying as the people who overuse the word 'overland' to the point that it's become more of a marketing strategy than an actual hobby.

I think what really killed the term for me was less the commercialization of it (that happens with just about everything that becomes popular) but more the people that act like fools on social media and youtube, less for the sake of enjoying the outdoors and more for the sake of attention and likes. If anything it's just a sad reminder that society as a whole can't have nice things anymore without some people ruining it.

I think they’re a good analogue for the whole offroading/overlanding scence in general. They started as weekend warriors enjoying themselves, and happened to also enjoy video editing. Then a sponsor or two came along, then some money became involved and it morphed into the Instagram driven monstrosity that it has become now.

I really enjoyed the first two seasons they did where they went around US, Alaska, and Canada, just getting out there and checking off bucketlist locations with minimal sponser intrusion. Now every other video is a walkaround of some unobtainium rig or sponsor-led product overview.

I can’t help but be a little jealous though, they turned a hobby into a full time job.

Which is really what most people strive to do. My fiance did it with photography and I would love to do it with restoring cars or something of the like.
