What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

So some more digging on the misfire and my code reader is showing LTFT at 14.1... Anyone know what it should be around for 3.4? And why it might possible be so high?

 

Fuel trims should be between -10 and 10, closer to 0 the better...from what I gather. 14 is too high if that's what it's averaging out to be

numbers too high in the positives = lean

numbers too low in the negatives = rich

Given you have a misfire code I would imagine the fuel trim numbers being off is related to that but beyond there I'm just guessing. Hopefully someone else knows

 

That’s what my thought was. This misfire started after I filled the tank up so maybe bad gas?

 

Could be if it happened right around after you filled up...or might just be coincidence. There are a lot of things that could cause a misfire, what's the code?

 

very possible. bad gas can cause misfiring. but usually fuel trims will be in the 20s 30s if its e85 or shit gas

 

I just saw he said he has a P0304 code in a previous post...that would mean it's isolated to just one cylinder then right, the 4th one? If it was bad gas wouldn't it effect all cylinders?

 

P0304. I tried a new plug and swapping coils around. Nothing has changed. Gonna pick up wires and try that next.

I would take @Empty_Lord's advice given his profession but I wouldn't rule out the injector on that cylinder as a possibility. There's gotta be a way to narrow it down though without throwing parts at it

 

could be wires. but these trucks are getting old.. wouldnt be surprised if its an injector.

but before jumping on injector i would do a compression test.

 

Yeah, I was having misfiring and replacing the spark plug wires fixed that issue. I tried swapping coils like @Teke and didn't fix it, but wires did.

 

I just did wires 40k ago along with spark plugs so I don’t have high hopes.

Yeah I was gonna do compression next. I’m more than capable of fixing it but I just don’t know if I will have the time to do it.

 

Welp I guess it was the wires! Makes me feel much better. LTFT was 3.1 after I swapped wires and the misfire went away.

Every run for me is a shakedown run to test the last repairs. Speaking of which, cracked the coil bucket nice and proper.



Time for more repairs.

Ima check mine next time I go home, only reason mine would do that is because of the awesome spacer lift though.

So I’m probably safe.
