What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Hm. I asked at a dealer last fall and they had to ask if that was something they did, and they said they didn't unless its making noises. So thats cool.

 

They're thinking of a 22re then or some other rocker based engine. Shim over bucket engines get quieter as the tolerances get tighter, not the other way around like old folks are used to.

 

hm yea those exhaust numbers do look pretty far out.
I'd just reshim it accoringly and maybe check it again in 15-20k to make sure it's not something else if you're worried.
Was it running fine before checking the gaps?

 

As someone who literally measures tiny things all day for work with micrometers in an attempt to machine perfect parts.... You should consider remeasuring, you're data suggest faulty use of your measuring device.

Well, it looks like it'll be easiest to pull the exhaust cam anyway, and I've got a friend with a micrometer, so I'll give it a once over while its out.

That's true. I mean the cats for sure. Didn't think they tweaked the headers much but I can't say I'd be surprised haha

Yeah, ran great. A little miss at idle when warm, but nothing spectacular.

 

Mine is a little darker it seems. Looking for a 4Runner that I can get what I want then sell parts off it.

When I was measuring mine, I measured like 4 times on each shim to make sure they were consistent.

Then use a good micrometer or calipers to measure the shims when it's all out.

 

They changed them entirely from the early ones like we have, our cast manifolds have almost no plenum area and encourage the exhaust in the direction of the tailpipe, the newer ones are a clamshell design with no directionality, the exhaust just comes out of the head and slams into a flat wall of the clamshell which acts as a plenum because it is undivided. I'm sure it's a cost saving measure, but it's an extremely shitty design from a performance view.

 

Ok, will do the whole thing a second time.

That #1 exhaust valve has me most confused. Its not hard to get to, and I spent a good 10 minutes trying to get a gauge under the lobe. Could not get it.

 

This is a micrometer job for sure, and unfortunately it's not a tool lots are familiar with using hell I see people at work use it wrong sometimes.

A 4runner ebrake/handbrake swap into a 5 lug would be pretty nifty

 

Hydro e brake instead of the lazy cable setup though, just use the stock 4 runner handle

Yup. The location is just more natural feeling then the pull handle weve got. Only took Toyota 3 generations of Tacos to figure this out haha.

My small brain still cannot comprehend why that is
