Mine requires some dirt and mud to be on it. Otherwise it doesn't run right.

I had a lot of trouble with mine, flipping them seemed to help to give a better mating surface, with no adverse reaction thus far. But obviously there’s a reason why they were designed with the slight beveled edge. Just wanted to share my experience

Ian, Thank you man. I appreciate it. I actually had to take it to our local Toyota Dealer about two weeks ago for an abs issue. I don't like going because it usually leads to :spending:, and I love drooling over the new Tacoma in the showroom.
When I was checking out, two of the service guys commented on how clean and unmolested my 1st gen was. Of course one of the sales staff hears this and states, "you can just about name your price for a good used older Tacoma or 4Runner"........."you ready to trade?"

So... I emailed McGeorge Toyota for some clarification.

From what I am gathering, from their response, the 8.4 (non e-lock) axle and the 8.0 (e-lock) axle have a different parts list. I think both the ABS and non-ABS axles @Timmah! did in his video may have been 8.4 (non e-lock) axles, and that is why both of his parts list were essentially the same (except for the ABS cog).

Here is what the conversation looks like with McGeorge Toyota.Hopefully this clears some things up for others. And doesn't just further muddy the water. I know @lightnfast was curious about this.

    FROM ME:

    Good morning

I need to order the parts neccesary to replace my rear axle bearing and seals. I have a list of part numbers, but they are not matching the part numbers listed for my vehicle.

The vehicle is a 2002 Toyota Tacoma
    VIN # 5TEGN92N42Z053932
My truck is equipped with a rear e-locker. I am not sure if the e-locker was a factory option or a dealer option (I think this may be the reason for the different part numbers)

I need the following parts and these are the part numbers I have.

    X2 - Type K oil. 90313-48001
    X2 - Bearing. 90363-40020-77
    X2 - Type S oil. 90310-50006
    X2 - Ring O. 90301-88077
    X4 - Spacer Bearing. 42423-20010
    X2 - Ring Snap Shaft. 90520-36045

I would like to order these parts (or the correct similar parts for my application) as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    FROM MCGEORGE TOYOTA:

    Hi,
Some of those parts in your list are not correct for your vehicle. Here is a comprehensive list of the correct part numbers for your vehicle, starting from the inner seal and working outward:
    --90310-50006--inner seal
    --90520-36045--c-clip
--42423-20010--bearing retainer (if you have ABS brakes, you will need two per side...if you do not have ABS brakes, you'll need one per side)
    --90363-40068--bearing
    --90301-88077--rubber o-ring
    --90313-54001--outer seal
--43517-35010--ABS tone ring (one per side, only applicable if your vehicle has ABS brakes)

I Bold/Italic the part numbers that stayed the same. It appears the outer seal and the bearing are different between the 8.0 and 8.4 axles.

No. I think your first part numbers were for 95-00 axles. Which most definitely do not use the same bearings and outer seals as the 01-04s.

You're still two retainers shy unless you want to reuse two.

Planning on reusing 2 of them. Ordering 2 so if any of them are damaged I have them to replace.

What's the consensus on CJV axle strength vs OEM? I know OEM will always be best, but OEM manual hub CVs are reman anyways from Toyota.
I've never ran them, but maybe someone can chime in with their experience or if anyone has had bad luck with them?
