What have you made/created today?

Not perfect but good enough. I made my cutting board jig yesterday and planed it down.

Thanks, the old cutting board was not holding up well to years of abuse. I'd have to take the old one apart and replane everthing so I made another one instead We'll see how this holds up. Of course after I glued it together I see a better way to glue up the pieces ...I need to replenish my lumber to make another one like this.

Just moved into a new house and got the internet set up today. As much as it pains me to say it, it'll be a while before I get a studio up and running. In the meantime, (as such with any woman I guess, haha) I'm thinking about my decorating options. My husband made a cross at his old machine shop out of aluminum that he's quite proud of that I'd absolutely love to put over our fireplace as a surprise. The only issue is, I have absolutely no idea how to mount it. It weighs about 30 pounds, and I'd like it on the wall, but I'm thinking my only option would be to lean it on the wall from the ledge above the fireplace and create a base for it. Any ideas?

 

A wood rectangle screwed to the wall with the cross supported on 3/16 dia pins located in the lower corners of the arms of the cross. If you rather not have the pins visible epoxy (JB Weld) some nuts (4, 1/4 - 20 size) on the back side of the cross then attach the cross to wood. Use the nuts as stand off from the wood base. I think that would look nice. Your hubby must be a machinist with CNC skills. Cross looks nice.

He is a fairly gifted machinist. He got to do this piece at his last shop while he was still in school a couple of years ago; it matches a cross tattoo he has as well as a necklace given to him, so it's a piece of symbolism he rather likes. It'll be refreshing to have a little something else on the wall. I paint so my paintings are all over, and we have a game room full of some fun doodads but nothing he's made yet. Tired of everywhere I live being my personal art gallery, haha.

 

I would think theres a stud in the middle of the space there. Home depot has these, run one into the stud in the middle of the space, drill it through the middle of the cross then put some silver paint on the head to make it less noticeable. Or they have dry wall anchors that hold up to 50lbs just get a longer cross tip screw the same diameter of the the one in the box and do the same, if no stud in the middle of the space.

...how thick is the object, 1/4"?... if so, you could drill and tap into the back of it to attach to the clips using small machine screws, ..then use wood screws to attach the mating clips to the wall (stud, or use appropriate drywall anchors)
