What's really bizarre is people willingly pay a monthly fee to listen to the radio. . .

I find it more bizarre that people are willing to listen to commercials and the same songs over and over again when you can listen to satellite radio commercial free with dozens of music channels, news, talk radio, sports, for about $0.50 per day with perfect reception.

I'm reminded of how horrible AM/FM is every time a rent a car.

    Enough for now
It randomly stopped working back in October after some heavy rain. I have a avid offroad bumper guard but it didn’t affect the BSM up until that point. I haven’t gotten it checked out, I don’t want to pay to have it fixed until a few other mods are completed.

BSM is a nice to have for sure but I’ve done alright without it, it’s forced me to triple check before merging

    Totally agree.
My satellite radio costs $0.16 per day per vehicle and totally worth it.
It's not 1965 any more, people also pay for things on their TV and computers.

I wasn't around in 1965, but I would bet they were smart enough to spot a silly gimmick when they saw one.

Like the internet, cable TV, $6 coffee, $50k pickup trucks, air conditioning, $15 hamburgers (fries extra)...

The list goes on and on. Satellite radio is super inexpensive when you look at all the other crap people spend their money on. But I guess that is what is cool, you spend your money where you see value.

Just curious, what do you listen to? (I am not knocking you, to each his own, I just get super frustrated with commercials and static).

    Streaming services.
Usually when someone makes fun of satellite radio, it’s because they listen to music they want to hear when they want to hear it and are capable of selecting albums or building playlists from a huge selection of music.

I don’t need VJs serving up random popular tracks and telling me what year it was released or whatever.
I get it. Radio has its place. Some people really want to hear a narrow scope of songs they are familiar with, interspersed with tid bits of news or sports or what the hell ever.
That’s fine, but paying to have no control over what song comes on next will always be crazy to me.
Satelite radio guys are always so quick to defend their purchase…

I'm not defending it as much as saying it is pretty darn cheap. And when I asked what does he listen to, I meant in the vehicle in general. Talk radio? AM? FM? Sports? Most people I know that knock satellite listen to talk radio and really don't care where they are, they'll listen to news shows or sports shows, etc. As long as someone is talking they are happy. Or they listen to top hits station and are happy hearing the same 30 songs over and over.

I'm a music junky. I have about 50 GB of music on my phone, I stream albums on Amazon music at home and can pick albums, listen to one of their channels or playlists, my kids have Spotify at $10 a month each and swear by it, and I have SiriusXM in the truck for short trips when I really don't feel like picking something of my own for a 10 minute drive to the store or just in general when I want to listen to something different or on long road trips where I just don't want to deal with my device or I'm sick of what I know by heart.

Generally speaking I'm not going to hear anything I don't already know when I'm using a streaming service or of course shuffling my own music collection. I'm not going to hear anything new. On satellite, half the time I am listening to something like Deep Tracks or Underground garage and hearing music that I'm not going hear elsewhere or seek out. I learn about new bands I've never heard of or old bands I really never gave a chance before, then stream their albums on Amazon when I'm at home.

I was off-grid camping a few months ago during the baseball playoffs. No internet access, no AM/FM radio stations, no streaming, and I was able to follow and listen to the MLB playoff games live. Yesterday I had to run errands most of the day and listened to whatever NFL playoff game was on at the time and didn't have to hunt around on AM or FM trying to find who was broadcasting it.

I just don't get the "I'm not paying for something I can already get for free, satellite radio is a rip off!". Because you don't get anything for free. Listening to 2 minutes worth of advertisements, even if you don't buy what they are selling, well you gave up 2 minutes of listening to something you wanted to listen to.

People knocking Satellite radio won't think twice about paying $5 for a bottled water or $15 for a burger plus $5 more for fries. We are talking daily pocket change to subscribe. One of the most inexpensive and best things I spend my money on.

Do you mean you listen to music via streaming services?
    How much does that cost?
How is that different than satellite radio?
Do you need to use your phone or another device?
The radio was in my truck when I bought it, no extra cost.

What are you on about? Because I’m talking about satellite radio.
I’d gladly listen to FM/AM for free before paying for satellite
That explanation makes a lot of sense! Thanks for sharing your perspective.
Sports aren’t selling point for me but it seems like that’s about all that is keeping either platform alive. If scores are your thing I understand the reach and convenience of satellite being really nice.
I have an eclectic taste and not much of anything that I want to listen to winds up on the radio, satellite or otherwise. Hence my jaded view on both. If I’m going to listen to random songs I don’t really care for and chatter, it doesn’t matter to me if that chatter is an advertisement or a show.
I relate to your comments about replaying my catalog. I find new music from ai generated playlists on streaming services. Sure I don’t like every song, but I can skip them.

That’s my rub. I’m not paying to be a captive audience for something that offers me nothing.
If someone finds value and entertainment in am/fm they will love satellite and I can see it being something they value deeply.

Your kids are on to something. Is there a reason you use Amazon over Spotify? There’s price break for family plans

I was a too quick to judge on this once I thought about it. I have excellent FM radio stations to choose from broadcasting from small cities in the rural areas I spend my time in. Cadillac, Manistee, Big Rapids, Ludington, etc.

If I had to live in say grand rapids (MI) and could only listen to that market I would probably pay for satellite radio, or stick forks in my own ears.

So once I thought about it, I get it.

The biggest reason is years ago Amazon had a service where you could load your MP3s up to their servers as long as you were an Amazon Music Plus member (which I am). So I can stream my entire catalog thru my echo devices or play anything from their catalog. They discontinued that service but if your catalog was already uploaded, they kept it there. I'm happy with it and not sure that the hassle of switching and integrating into Spotify is worth it.

Satellite radio is the best thing since sliced bread. 10 cents a day and never have to listen to commercials. Also helps when you’re traveling to a new city and having to hunt for radio stations. I too was once a non-believer, but now I’m a supporter.

I thought the opposite around there, and preferred the satellite radio or what's on my iPhone. I couldn't find radio I cared for in Big Rapids/Cadillac. Still mostly don't only now I'm in Petoskey where it is a bit better.
