What is its purpose or how or what do I put in there?

That was my first thought? This is a pen holder. I try to put pens in there before? Did not fit correctly? “Just Try again , it work this time.”
Not sure why it didn’t before? Maybe holder was too new? Today the pen holder felt softer?

pretty sure that in the first years of the 3rd gen this was a holder for the tailgate key

It was for the original tail gate key, it was coded separately from the smart key.

 

In Texas, people probably use the holder for a spare bullet and a backup Yeti sticker.

 

Yep, I've read this as well. Haven't tried to put my key there yet but it works great for pen.

Officially, it's a pen holder. That's not mentioned in the Tacoma owner's manual, but it is mentioned in the Tundra owner's manual (the Tundra has a similar holder).

Where can I get a Toyota logo pen, that's the problem.

 

I keep the little inserts for the seatbelts in that bracket. Two are about as wide as a pen.

They turn off the seatbelt chime when something is on the passenger side.

 

Make sure the barrel diameter of the pen is .325". Fatter pens won't fit, or you risk breaking the plastic clip.
