What if I just unplug the safety sensor?

Yeah, and thanks for the info, but the sensor doesn't exist on (most/some/all) of the '16s and perhaps later years. I'm going to bet ABS still works for them. But you could be right, I'm new to this. But I don't need Emergency stop, Cruise control or Lane Assist. I have no idea how to test if ABS still works. Saturday approaches.

I have driven over a million miles in my life. Had one accident and it was getting hit while I was stopped. A few weeks ago there was a kid walking along the road... in shorts and t shirt... in 37 degree weather. As I was driving past, I glanced at him and his attire. When I glanced over, a lady pulled out in front of me. My "safety feature" on my Tundra kept me from hitting her in the driver's door plus she had a small child in a car seat.
    I was thankful.

You don't need the safety systems until you need the safety systems. When is that, you might ask? You'll know the answer when the time comes!

16 and 17 model years were designed/built without the sensor. 18 and up are designed/built with the safety stuff. Be prepared for some warning lights.

    My understanding...

When you unplug the front collision sensor, you will get an error message saying: “PCS Sensor malfunction, visit your dealer”. As a result:

    1. Adaptive Cruise Control will not work, but regular cruise control will work.
    2. Emergency Brake/Stop will not work
    3. Pedestrian Brake will not work.

Blind Spot Monitoring should still work.
    Parking Assist should still work.
    Lane Departure MAY still work.

    ABS should not be affected...
Vehicle Stability Control should not be affected.

My understanding is that you can permanently turn off the PCS warning message using Carista. However, you will have a “PCS OFF” light illuminated on your dash next to your seat belt warn light.

Certainty sounds right. Reverts it back to 2016-2017 configuration. No Safety Sense! Literally and figuratively! All for a grille! To each, there own. Have fun and good luck:hattip:

I thought the Tacoma lacks the pedestrian stop feature because these trucks don't have TSS 2.0

As much as $ will allow
Arrieta has a lot of good 411 there.

I’d worry about throwing errors and constantly having lights on your dash. If you don’t mind that, then go for it.

If your abs isn't working, the abs light will be on.

In today's world it's a definite financial liability as well. If you hit someone and it's found that you intentionally disabled the safety features you open yourself up to some more fun. You may also need to check your insurance policy as some state that modifying such safety features voids coverage or requires notification as those features are figured into the rates with safety discounts.

I can tell you how it works. You set it at 80mph. Everything will be going good as you effortlessly sail along. Then some dope drifts into your lane doing 60mph. No big deal, you are accustomed to idiots changing lanes for no reason and figure you will just slide to the left lane and go around him. This is where it gets good because before you get to move over to pass the adaptive cruise kicks in and will launch you toward the windshield only to be pulled back by the fast acting seatblelts resulting in a crushed sternum. Hopefully some unsuspecting sole isn't behind you or you will likely get a rinse and repeat effect as they blast you from behind. Yeah, I'm a big fan of the system!! It is almost as useless as the auto dimming headlights that will blind an oncoming car, but dim when you drive past Anunt Mary's porch light 200 yards off the road.

That's odd, I use mine daily on an 80+ mile round trip commute with no issues.

Find someone with a 2017 who is willing to do a straight swap. You dont have to worry about the sensor, and you might gain the driver's side bed cubby for your troubles. win-win.

Don't know where you bought your grill from, but customcargrills sells mesh grills that they say are TSS sensor compatible. Maybe yours will be too? https://www.customcargrills.com/index.asp

Undoubtedly it is the way I drive. If I set it on 70 and was getting passed by 50% of the traffic in the road, it would be fine, but honestly I drive like an idiot. If I go on a 2 hour drive and I get passed by more then 5 cars on the highway, I'm going slow that day.

By this logic --and I'm just asking-- if my truck is perfectly stock and has a working TSS sensor and I rear end someone, or God forbid hit a pedestrian, then am I relieved of at least some responsibility or is Toyota at least partially at fault? I mean after all it was their "Safety Sense" that failed to prevent me from hitting whatever I hit, right?

I'm no lawyer, but my guess is an absolute "NO". Furthermore, my guess is that if you disabled TSS due to modifications, adding a bumper, or whatever and had and accident you will still be liable and that liability is what it is... Now, perhaps your insurance company might have some fine print somewhere that says you cannot modify your vehicle or disable safety sensors, change seatbelts or whatever... but that would be in your policy...

The system isn't fail proof and doesn't relieve you of your responsibilities as a driver. Removing the safety equipment that could have prevented or lessened the damages from a crash is completely different. You're obviously liable for the accident just like you normally would be but by willingly altering the safety equipment you open yourself up to the option of an easy negligence suit should you hit and injure someone.
