It wouldn't matter anyways unless we revert to isolationist status (want to see hyperinflation, drop in wages, and a HUGE reduction in service-based jobs?).

We get a relatively small amount of our oil from the various "stans"... but take the Iran situation. They cut exports to other countries, those other countries now need to find other sources, which places additional demand upon our sources (imported or domestic)... and that drives the price up globally.

I don't know about now, but 15 years ago, we actually exported more oil than we imported. Oil pumped from ConUS wells is more costly and "dirtier" to refine than "sweet" crude, so it is more economical to export our oil and import oil that is more environmentally friendly to refine.

Yes, mudlogging is part of it. I do other stuff too. Geosteering and mudlogging together are about 99% of my job though, with greater emphasis on steering. I started out in Oklahoma on Woodford and Mississippian wells, and now for the last 3 months I've been in the Williston Basin doing Bakken and Three Forks work.

Tar sands are like any other source: they can be economic and when they are they are developed. As prices for crude creep up due to a variety of forces it means sources like tar sands, which contain low grade petroleum and are relatively expensive to extract and refine, become economically viable. But as noted earlier on this thread, there are other sources that are cheaper to extract and tar sands are less economic. But as prices at the pump rise and it becomes more profitable they get developed more.

This thread is fun. Not often you get to see such a fantastic collection of speculation and misinformation in one place ;)

I really want to read that paper or report, if you have a source for it please post it. I'll tell you right now it's about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, but it would be fun to read.

Oil isn't the problem. We have plenty of that. It's refining that's the problem. We haven't built any new refineries since the eighties. And not to mention even thought we say "the middle east" controls it. It's actually us, and British oil companies who physically controll it. They build all the equipment, and maintain it. Thus indirectly controlling supply. Wells and refineries are not running at capacity. And then there's the bidding on oil futures. Which really screws up. Anything they view as a threat to the supply chain jacks the bidding on futures up. So it's like hey. Let's call that situation a threat and jack up prices.

Can I be a geologist? I kicked some rocks today, one I discovered was just frozen dirt as it shattered upon impact with my steel toes.
