What in the world have I missed?

Hey all!
I haven't posted in quite a while, since I traded my last Tacoma just over 2 years ago. I've drove a 2006 SR5 4x4 DC from 2006 to 2012, and then a 2010 OR 4x4 DC manual for the next 2 years.
Now I'm considering getting another. Wanted some quick hits on the 2017's and 2015's. I'm skipping the 16 since I try not to buy "1st year" vehicles.

Buy a 2018. Hopefully most of the 3rd gen quirks will be ironed out. The 3rd gen is certainly very nice, but a significant number of 2016 and 2017 have transmission and rear end problems.

Spend time reading. Lots of reading. Then do several extended test drives, and make up your own mind.

Don't bother skipping the '16 'because it's first year', the '17 has all the same problems. Except there is a power rear window in the '17.

Some folks get trucks that seem to be issue free, some folks get trucks that only have a couple of issues, some get ones that have everything wrong.

Pro tip: You'll eliminate a fair amount of problem risk if you pursue a manual transmission. And make sure the differentials have received the recall inspection/repair.

My tip: I'd shop for a '12-'15 low mile cream puff.

 

I owned a '16 with no manufacturer issues at all. Loved it but traded for a '17. Definitely too early to tell (only 1,500 miles) but it seems to be great too. I know some people have had issues, but I've had none and love them. The transmission is definitely not great, but its not a problem for my lifestyle. I say go for an '18 and odds say you'll be fine. I love my 17' DCSB OR w/ jbl. Some feel the 3rd gen motor is too much of a dog, and the trans. shift points aren't the best, which might be true. When I'm driving in town and need the truck to be more responsive, some of us just leave the ect button on, and that solves it imho. The 3rd gen's are great trucks imho.
