I didn't want to wrestle a large pickup (domestic / Tundra) as my daily driver. It came down to a choice between the Taco and the Frontier. In that regard, there was really not a choice.

Wrecked my Ranger saw a pretty white Sport that I fell in love with. The seller was a prick and the truck was abused so I went elsewhere.

I really liked the 2nd Gen styling when I first saw it in 2005, when I was a freshman in college. Since then it had been on my radar as a top choice, because I'd had Toyotas and they were great cars. I knew right away if I got one, it would be a DCSB 4x4 Sport in Super White. When it came time to buy, I really wanted an F-150, but it was just outside my comfort zone financially, so I went with the Tacoma.

That being said, it's been a really solid truck and hasn't ever let me down. Very happy with the truck from a reliability and styling standpoint. However, for the money, I'm probably going full size next time. More towing capacity, more space (I'm a big dude and the DC is kinda tight, esp. the rear seats for passengers), for not all that much more money. But the Tacoma is a great truck for what it is.

Got my truck for 4 main reasons:

    1. Loved my 4Runner I had in high school and my dads 04 PreRunner
    2. Tacomas are one of, if not THE best looking trucks ever designed in my opinion
    3. Toyota reliability is very high, even with little TSB's thrown in here and there, no big deal
    4. Other midsize trucks are either junk or lack what the Tacoma offers.

First 'car' was an 86 Toyota 4x4. Loved it and drove if for 8 years/150K without a miss before I got into cars and away from offroad..

Once we owned a home and needed a truck we knew it would be a Tacoma.:D

It all started in '93 with an '83 Toyota 4x4 pickup. I was hooked. Owned a mustang for 4 years after that and came straight back to a new 2000 Taco. Owned it for 12 years and there was no question what I would buy next. You can't beat the reliability or looks of a Tacoma.

    1. Needed a truck for practicality, coming from a '12 Mustang GT
    2. Toyota reliability and resale value (resale value became important to me after seeing the value of my '12 Mustang GT plummet within 8 months)
    3. Best looking mid size truck, imo. I didn't need/want a full size even though I almost pulled the trigger on a 5.0 '13 F150 FX4 instead

One of my favorite memories as a kid growing up in Pennsylvania was every Christmas my Aunt would come up from Virginia and we would drive around late at night in the snow in her Red xcab 5spd Toyota pickup when few/nobody else was on the road and look at xmas lights. I told myself that when I got my first real job I'd get me a Yota like that. That's exactly what I did.

The reliability/looks/functionality of the truck didn't hurt either.

Most of my hobbies require towing lots of gear around, so a truck was the way to go. Also, I grew up in a college town where everybody and their mom drove a mustang so I was determined not to conform. The Taco was the best looking truck on the road, held its value the best, and was a good size. I'm on my third one :)

Pretty much same for me. Was driving a F-150 before. These trucks are reliable and can take a beating.

    1. It's the only reg cab 4x4 that gives you the bonus of manual locks and crank windows
    2. It's a manageable size. Why did pickups so huge and complicated?
    3. I owned a 1st gen for 10 years and got a good price for it on the trade for my '13.

My uncle has owned 5 Toyota 4x4 trucks with almost 2,000,000 total miles. Probably 200k were in 4wd.
He only did regular maintence including timing belts, 1 clutch, a couple a/c lines and 1 cab. (His '94 Pickup got decapitated by a logging truck, but logging company paid for repair).
I needed a TOUGH truck that was reliable, so I bought a Tacoma.

You can depend on this truck. All it takes is some TLC from time to time.

Had an '07 FJ and wanted to go back to a pick up truck. I didn't want a Ford Chevy or a Dodge because the FJ was very good to me and I wanted the Toyota reliability. Felt it was a natural choice for me.

Most crappy domestics would have been sent straight to the junk yard and totaled from that. Not a Toyota truck though, way too much resale value still left in that sucker. Just fix it and drive it another 100,000 miles and then sell it for more then what a crappy pos domestic vehicle brings with less miles and fewer years on it.
