When I head into the mountains where I live with a sleeping bag, cooler and bike, it's camping. When the guy from the nearby big city comes up for his once a year weekend campout with $5K worth of survival & camping gear is overlanding, also known as overloading.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Lol, I know right. It’s a place to set up a tent and get busy. What’s nice about this area is your right in the middle of the national forest, so anyway you head is an adventure.

Back to the bison, I was driving (a Jetta diesel) from ny to Portland via cali, overland even. Staying out on the range in South Dakota. I had eaten some sort of dried mushrooms and a bison decided to make his way towards camp. I stood on top of a picnic and lost the thing in the grassy wash. Saw it a few minutes later heading away from us. Nearly shit myself, adrenaline took over and the mushrooms faded out.

I love to hear stories like this one. I had a similar experience, in which I was offered the cabin my grandfather built on the 2nd tallest ridge in NC. The house was a family vacation cabin, never lived in.
The house is cantilevered over a huge granite gorge/creek, and sits about 75’ above it. It’s nuts, you could never build something like this, as they wouldn’t allow it.
I remember when I was a kid, I used to walk the property with my grandpa and said, one day I will be the care taker of this beautiful property.
34 years later it happened, it’s still fresh…as I moved here 6 months ago.

My uncle lives in my grandfathers hunting cabin. My grandfather was given as much land as he wanted for a job he did. He told the guy I only want an acre, I’m just gonna hunt on your land anyways. That cabin has been off the grid always, nice place in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes it would take 2 cars to get there when the bridge would wash out. Unfortunately, that land is now owned by the nyc water board and it got crazy with security after 9/11.

I feel you on the bridge. This is 1 of 2 bridges on my driveway. The creek floods every few years after a big hurricane and will rise 30’!!! This bridge is older than you and me combined! Locust trees make some of the strongest beams you can find. I have some on my property hard as stone over 100yrs old.

Shit like this makes me miss the east coast. My uncle’s bridge got washed out a few years back but the foundation didn’t. I think about all the mosquitoes you don’t see in those pics, and still want to go back

The other bridge got demolished by the last flood we had. Buckled so bad I don’t even have the balls to walk across it :)
I just drive through the creek now, but I will say that I have had to use my crawler to get back to town for groceries. When it floods up here the entire mtn turns into one huge watershed, I mean I could boogie board down the FSR that connects to my driveway. There are waterfalls everywhere, and those cross the gravel roads and make big ass ruts quickly.

One of our property borders on Seneca lake had a gentle little waterfall streaming down it. In the spring, it would rage. You would stand there watching all the water and occasionally see a tree go by. The noise difference was incredible from, I can’t hear you to, for some odd reason I have to pee.

I'm thinking it's time I upgrade from my 13" 18V Ryobi mower. That thing could take care of my 400 sq. ft. lawn in no time.
