I think this whole rtt thing is just a fad... makes people feel like they're on an actual expedition in the outback of Africa. Either that or they sleep on the roof because they're afraid of getting bit by a chipmunk.... j/k :)

The funny thing is they don't use the term overlanding on any of the episodes, they always call it camping.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
I remember watching an episode that he talked about that very thing. I think it was when they came to the states.

I'll be honest I never liked the word overlanding. Always just seemed like exploring to me . More showing the boys what it was like camping to me no matter where we went .

I saw a show when I was a kid that had Land Rovers going through Africa. Those dudes went weeks, winching, river crossing and vast expanses of grassland. To me, that is overlanding. True adventurers.

Overlanding is actually a fashion term that refers to a strict dress code. You are only allowed to wear Navy Blue, Khaki, Grey, and Olive Drab. If you wear those colours you are Overlanding.

If you wear any other colours it’s technically a “road trip”

    These diagrams might help:

    Exhibit A - Overlanding:

    2F6B68BC-E321-427A-B1BC-C529C766D0D8.jpg

    Exhibit B - Road Trip:

    D5DC2008-329A-44A4-9003-09B249F71B8F.jpg

Also, all men must wear ball caps when Overlanding, though breach of this rule is usually forgiven.

    Hah!

But how about sleeping on rocks, cowshit, on a hill you can’t level out in a tent, in a field with cholla spines or melting snow and mud all over, with buffalo that trample your stuff at night, when you pull off the road at 1AM and want to be in bed in less than 5minutes out of the wind, off the ground during a sandstorm, in cold or rain and not have to sleep in the cab. Nah, it’s not a fad. I really miss my VW camper with a pop up tent, but there’s no way it could safely take us camping where we go these days. Having the RTT just makes up for not having the convenience of that pop up tent camper without its weaknesses (no A/C, weak motor susceptible to summer desert heat, no airbags, etc.).

Yeah in the US we're just exploring. It's cool no need to call it what it's not.
It's just fun to get away from the road rage shootings . Just don't cut anyone off on the way .

Kairolanding - I'm lost in the middle of the desert and the beer's getting warm. I'll sleep in the bed of the truck and figure it out in the morning.

My cousin in France did that across the Sahara in Pugeot sedans with her friends back in the 70’s, they had crap tied across the roof, on the hood and down the side windows. Her photos of their trip were epic.

sleeping on rocks, cowshit, field with cholla spines->all can be solved with a shovel
on a hill you can’t level out in a tent-> can't level your truck either so doesn't count
melting snow and mud all over,->Gonna leave you truck parked in a mud pit over night? Could be siting on the frame by the time you wake up, or you could just find a better campsite.
with buffalo that trample your stuff at night->buffalo will trample your truck too, find a better campsite.
bed in less than 5minutes out of the wind,->practice setting up your tent and you can have it up in 5mins easy, practice doesn't cost thousands of dollars
ground during a sandstorm-> gonna rek your thousand dollar rtt by setting it up in the high winds of a sandstorm? or you could wait a few hours for it to pass.
in cold or rain-> just as cold and rainy in your rtt as it is on the ground

    so ya just a fad.
