Just bought a 1998 Tacoma SR5 4x4. I was worried about how majority of people on here complain about the clock position but out of the two days of driving it, I have to say, I have no issue with it, see it just fine, I am 5'9". I can imagine if there is a taller person driving then yeah, might be annoying having to move just to look at the time.

As of right now, my complaint would have to be the dash making all sorts of noises. Not quite sure why it does that, the noise goes away after a little while of driving, maybe due to the a/c cooling the interior. I live in Oklahoma, so interiors get extremely hot when your vehicle sets out in the sun.

Dash rattle is a common issue of 1st gens. Do some research for the cure

The clock issue is mostly for the 01-04 series. They have a different steering wheel and I believe the seats sit at a little different height.

X2 on the steering wheel. I only check it through the wheel. I am sure Toyota justified the clock position by saying it could be seen through the wheel on the 95-00. Nobody checked it after the 01-04 wheel was mounted.

I can see it totally fine on my 99' without looking through the wheel. It's in plain view.

I see what you guys are saying now, had no idea the steering wheel was different.

Now I see why it would be a pain.

haha, wish mine was leather wrapped too, but not really cause the leather most likely would have be worn down a lot by now. My 2nd gen tacoma has a leather wrapped wheel, I bought it at about 85k miles and the leather was really used up.

My last truck, a ford , came without a leather wrapped wheel. I lucked out and found a leather wrapped one in a junk yard protected by a cheapo steering wheel cover. It was flawless!

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I haven't had the problem with peeling clear coat on my black truck. I do my best to do a deep clean and wax it twice a year though, that's probably why it hasn't yet. It's parked outside all year long too, the garage is reserved for my classic Mustang exclusively! That car still has the original factory paint job though so definitely don't want that getting screwed!

My 97 didn't come with a tachometer. Who the heck sells a manual transmission truck without a tach?

P.S.-I found a gauge cluster with a junk yard after a year of searching that was cable drive and had a tack. :dancingbacon:

Great find! Cable drive with tach for the 4cyl is the unicorn of clusters for these trucks.
