Guess I should have said what year I had. My '96 has 2 dinky little cup holders that pull out from the dash. Thats it. I usually carry around more than a styrofoam cup, usually a steel 1 liter bottle, and those cupholders are way too flimsy. I wish I had one like the later 1st gens had by the shifter. I also have a bench seat so no console.

The weak seatbelt retractors. I was thinking about this, then just yesterday saw an instagram post from someone I follow with a mid-80s Yota pickup with a picture of the damn driver's seatbelt hanging out of the door. o_O My '96 4runner did the same thing. I was reading a few threads looking for a fix and it seems people are still having problems with the new ones. What the hell, Toyota? On the other hand, unlike my 4runner which only had two flimsy cupholders perfectly positioned to jettison your coffee into the shifter boot at the first pothole, the '03 has almost an overabundance of cupholders, so I'll give Toyota engineers some credit there.

Nope, my '03 DC also actually has six (6) total cupholders, lol. 2 where the transfer case shifter should be.

Anybody have ideas on a gun safe or vault safe? I know the 01-04 have that hidden center console but it doesn't look big enough.

The Things I don't like about my old 1999 Tacoma,

Please excuse the language I am going to vent a little.

    1. For those of us that are in our late forties and early fifties that are pregnant with decade old fetuses, the 60/40 bench seat sucks Ass. I hope they did a better job on the buckets from an ergonomic stand point on the first generations.

    2. There is no place to put drinks except for one lousy cup holder.

    3. When my wife and I do have to take our old Tacoma on long distances, it beats the crap out of us as far as the suspension. These first generation Tacomas are not known for riding well. They ride more like a jack ass with a hunch back. It is kind of scary that this is part of the appeal of this generation.

    4. Oil Filter on the 3.4 engine is in a miserable place.

    5. The extra-cab is pretty miserable to get things in and out of.

    6. The Toyota 5VZ-FE 3.4 V6 engine is a solid little work horse, but it is thirsty even when it is off.

    7. The Toyota 5VZ-FE 3.4 V6 engine is not super easy to work on.

    Take it easy,
    Paul

Guess I dislike the lack of space behind the grill.

I have a DC so I wish the bed were bigger.

The clock is in a poor position... I’m not the first to complain about that.

Otherwise, there’s not much to complain about...

    Hmmm... What I don’t like.
The seat belt retraction thing is an inconvenience, but it’s habit to make sure it’s in the truck. The rattley passenger side dash board bothers me sometimes. But all in all I love my truck, she’s 16 years old, paid for, reliable, and hasn’t hit 100k yet. It doesn’t have the stupid looking wheel wells like a 2nd gen, or the large mouth bass grill like a 3rd gen. I wish I could have a fleet of these trucks specifically ‘01 to ‘04. I’d love to find a 4wd manual double cab. 1st gen = best gen, FTMFW!!! (I wouldn’t mind having a 40, a 70, and an old diesel Hilux either) After driving Yotas for 25 years, and seeing the problems of other manufacturers vehicles I’ve developed a certain loyalty. OH WHAT A FEELING!
