I suspect that Toyota is playing games with these definitions, particularly with respect to the clearance at the rear pumpkin. Has anybody seen how "running clearance" is being defined?

It’s whatever you want it to be.

One is a distinct definable term and the other is some bullshit they made up and they hope that you see the word “clearance” and won’t think too hard about it.

Lowest point of the truck to the ground.

I think I found my answer. The '24 has 9.5" of ground clearance (likely at the pumpkin), while "running clearance" (which excludes unsprung components like the differential) is 10.8". It is curious that the increase in ground clearance is only 0.1", considering the tire size increase from 265/70R16 to 265/70R17. The '23 would actually more ground clearance than the '24 with a 265/75R16.

There's no magic here. Depending on trim, 4th gen can have 9.5" axles, shared with the Tundra. Bigger pumpkin = less ground clearance. The good news is you'll be able to go up to 37" tires on the stock axle...

You should be more concerned about the other equipment hanging lower:
    • The fuel tank rear portion looks to be about 4" lower, courtesy of the 4-link suspension.
    • The spare tire front portion also looks to be about 4" lower, courtesy of the longer wheelbase and shorter rear overhang.
    • The lower link pivots protrude from the frame and will snag climbing ledges.
It should be noted all the above problems already afflict the current 4Runner.
