I want to get an idea of what my totally stock 2021 Off Road actually capable of. I would love to hear some stories from other members of what I can expect from this thing, between now, and actually ( if & when ) putting on some bigger tires and a lift.
When I go back to Utah and Colorado, I want to do some things like Imogene, Black Bear, White Rim. Moab , etc. Also some woods trails locally. Maybe even a beach. Are they possible, advisable, or crazy to do stock. Maybe some pics or stories of the craziest you have gotten with them. Thanks for your help.

My 2015 OR was a complete traction king off road, front and rear overhang where the limiting points.

Its not the truck's capability.......its the DRIVER's capability.

Everything you mentioned is possible for the truck to traverse.

You probably won't need a "GOAT" switch.

Great things. But you must first seek enlightenment and understanding.

This thread's probably a good start...

with the stock tires, probably most mild off roading but sandy/muddy conditions will overwhelm the tires toyota sticks on them for EPA ratings.

a good set of all terrains will cover you. I've gotten through difficult spots a few rubicons struggled with and thats with a 2nd gen SR5 4x4, no rear locker, no fancy traction assistance like the TRDOR.

You won't know what you're capable of until you go out and hit some trails. Only real limiter of stock capability is tires.

These trucks are pretty capable but as others are stating, driver skill and tires will be you limiting factor.

Any vehicle is capable. Some vehicles just require a little more getting out and pushing compared to others.

I’d not be caught dead at the mall, target or Walmart without my ditch lights, light bar, steps, aftermarket wheels 33” tires and at least a 2” lifted OR. A sport needs 6” at the minimum.

But really, I’ve heard and read a lot here that a stock OR is still pretty good off roads.

As long as you aren't rock crawling over boulders and going through mud you should be able to do pretty well (snow and ice you'll probably have trouble too). I have a '19 TRD OR (4x2) that's on stock suspension and tires. The hardest I've done is rocky/gravel like terrain, which most would say is probably nothing. I've had the truck for 2 years now and I have taken it out 3 times. Out of the 3 times I have never had to use my rear locker to get through or out of a situation.

I’ve got a ‘17 stock TRD OR and familiar with the places you asked about. Agree 100% with comments about driver skill and general competency being most critical.
To that point I’m not an overly experienced off-roader (yet) but personally would not be comfortable taking my stock on Black Bear nor Imogene.

For context, check out Tincup Pass in Nathrop, CO (~30min from Buena Vista)
I took the pass from St Elmo to the townsite of Tincup last summer, which maxed out my comfort level and what felt like the trucks capabilities. (Worth noting that trail conditions vary & not all experiences will be the same regardless the vehicle)

another reference for you is Cinnamon Pass near lake city, CO. It wasn’t as aggressive of a trail and my stock handled it great - and it was a blast

engineer pass, nearby, I would not take with my stock OR. I’ve done it with a side-by-side and it can get pretty gnarly

Overall this truck is an absolute blast and super capable, I love it dearly. Just joined TW and about to make some upgrades to my truck and I’m pumped. But even with stock suspension, I’ve been able to go almost anywhere I want the last 3yrs

The offroad is very similar to all other Tacomas, the big advantage is the bag of tools when it gets rough.

I used the rear locker to get up steep snowy hills at a lower speed. My friends TRD Sport needed to go 3 times my speed to get up.

Big thing is tires, they make a massive difference, the rest can wait.

Good stuff, thanks. The general consensus seems to be, get the tires upgraded to AT, and maybe some sliders. I have the OEM Predator running boards on it now, w/ those 2 steps hanging way down.
I was looking at the Falken Wildpeak AT 33”, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. Supposedly they are good with the road noise and ride, according to the million reviews I read. I think 4 installed would be around $750. I just don’t know whether I should upgrade to 17” wheels also, or keep the 16’s.

I'm stock except tires and while things have gotten dicey, I haven't well and truly gotten stuck in the sense I couldn't progress forward yet. @Skierrichy @crashngiggles are my witnesses hahaha

Just a thought, for tires, take a look at the “skinny” thread. I have a 2019 TRD OR, stock, with the exception of Cooper ST Maxx 255/85/16’s. They fit stock, no lift and no rubbing. I did remove the mud guards. As others have said, the tires add a new dimension to the truck’s stock capabilities. Enjoy!!
