Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station (also the HQ of NORAD) isn't capable of handling aircraft. It's a mountain. (Linky.) The closest Air Force Base (that can acutally handle aircraft - Peterson AFB, right next-door to the Air Force Academy) isn't a testing base.

As for "Area 51"... It's an aircraft testing facility... Known as "Detachment 3" of the Air Force Flight Test Center (which, as an organization, is HQ'd at Edwards AFB here in CA). Another common name for the airstrip is "Homey Field" (in addition to "Groom Lake"). It's even got it's own ICAO identifier (KXTA). Just Google it.

yeah thats cool. speaking of norad. i heard that it was supposed to be nuclear proof. but according to todays nuclear weapons if it took a direct hit it would be leveled i think. But what about the STAR WARS initiative by Reagan? is it opperational?

IIRC, the full array of systems that comprised the entire Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars") aren't operational. The Star Wars program, however, did bring light to new types of (smaller) strategic defense missile systems.

According to known history, the mountain complex was designed to withstand a 30-megaton blast within 1 nauticle mile. With Russia's Tsar Bomba (Emperor Bomb), that makes this "tolerance" to nuclear weapons (if any) pretty moot. It's blast yield is 50-megatons.

Have ya noticed how all the Air Force types have refrained from posting on this thread?

O.K. it's a piece of land where aircraft like the U-2, SR-71, F-117 and Aurora have been developed. Plain and simple, it's an aircraft proving ground. If ya don't believe me, check this out!

Funny story after ya check out that web site.

There was an F-111 flying in Nevada during a RedFlag exercise in the 80's.
It developed engine problems and requests permission to land at the next airfield. The controllers tell him to divert to Nellis. He requests to land at Tonopah. He is denied and told to divert. He lands anyway. As he is rolling to a stop, emergency vehicles surround the aircraft. They pull the pilot and WSO from the a/c and blindfold them. They take them to a debrief facility and after a thorough debrief put them on a bus, blindfolded and take them back to Nellis. After the a/c is repaired, Tonopah employees fly the F-111 out.
Just a story, I don't know how true that is...
