Everyone gets all triggered and indignant at the slightest idea of a big brother type "watching" them. It's happening, but not in the "alphabet" way you all fantasize about. The real answer is much more boring.

Private companies just want to know what kind of ads to put in front of you so you'll buy more shit. Stop buying so much shit and maybe the problem will start to get better

But that answer isn't as exciting as the first one. People see what they want to see

Thanks, this thread seems very well-researched. I'd love to dig into it some day. Terminating the antenna lines seems like a great idea. Especially if it gives me back my bluetooth mic and Siri*.

(*Apple by default will store your voice and use it to improve Siri; You can opt-out of this data collection to keep your voice and utterances private).

Until your vehicle insurance is based off your driver score and data collected from Toyota without your permission, miles travelled, hard braking, acceleration. If you’re a Ricky bobby kind of driver your rates will go up.
Not happening now but I could see in the future insurance companies doing it.

For what it’s worth the government buys all the data private aggregators have about you. It’s safe to assume that if Toyota, Target, Google, or Apple has it Uncle Sam does too.

I'm so happy that my truck does not have an app.

Not because of the tracking thing. I don't care about that. I just think the app is silly.

This was done when I was signing the papers. They asked me to setup the app and as soon as it asked for connected services I denied it all. They just sent me a letter saying it is time for my first oil change with an estimated 9200 miles. I am at 3400, so that’s one thing it isn’t still tracking.

I can’t tell you this, I had my grill out to change fog lights a few days ago. After I got them installed, I waited till it was a little darker. I backed the truck out of the shop and use the door to adjust the fog light height.

The next day I got an email from the dealer stating that they had noticed a collision sensor fault. Now this kind of makes sense because when I remove the grill I had the sensor disconnected. Apparently when I backed the truck out of the shop to just the headlights , at that point in time it sent the notification to Toyota.

As others have said, get used to it, it’s only gonna get more prevalent. But as to what exactly gets sent, I can’t answer that. This is my first time getting contacted from Toyota about anything in just under a year.

I recently got a notice from the dealership via email. They thought it was time for my first oil change. They are certainly not dragging my mileage because I have just under 15K now. I found it just under a year and I have changed the oil multiple times.

I was fine with mine until I installed the 2nd lo mod. If you push the button out of order, it pops up an error. No big deal, but my dealer called me three times about it. So I said enough and turned it off.

Need cell covereage in real time when that takes place? Well, I'm safe then. FTard Vermont has horrible coverage, we never have anything at the house. We get into arguments with people all the time telling us "look at the map, it says you're covered". Well that don't work here. I need to start making bets with them... $$$

I can't speak for Vermont but most of my travels to remote areas is that At&T and Verizon have the best coverage. but I've still camped places where nothing works until you hike nearly 2 miles up a mountain.

Insanely naive if you think corporations arent scheming about ways to use all this data for infinitely more uses than just "serving ads".

On this topic I bought a used 2022 recently from a non toyota dealership. 6 weeks after buying it I accidentally hit the siriusxm option on the dash within the next few days I received an email about my free trial as well as some letter from them as well. Ive never used siriusxm in my life nor did I sign up for any service like it at the dealership.

I pulled my DCM about 6 months ago, never looked back. Still have it, but removed the battery. I had to bridge the speakers on the right side of the truck back together, since they rely on the DCM to bridge them (that's spooky). Same with the mic, but I am running an iPad as my stereo and plan to install a USB condenser mic soon. Remote start can be restored with an aftermarket module, which I plan to add since all the aftermarket starters are made by the same company and the protocol for communication between the optional LTE modules and remote starters are standard serial protocols that have been well-documented on GitHub.
