    Hey, Just a Tip

1997-2008 Boxster, Cayman, 911 with M96,M97 engine, have a problem with the IMS "intermediate shaft bearing". Just google it, before spending $$$$$$$$

If you are a Porsche guy i;m sure you know of this problem. It can be fixed, and updated; but if you buy a car, with the original IMS, it will most likely go bad.

Once you google it, you will see.

I had a early 911, Loved that car. But I liked high performance Corvairs too. Wicked if you forgot that you had a rear engine car. I liked all hi-po cars.

We took that 911 in on trade and I kept it for my own.

I've actually never been into Porsche before. Is it expensive to fix? I've been wanting a ///M car for a long time, but was slightly disappointing when I actually rode in one

No. I got around 20 for it on CL.

Just letting you know that on a trade in, you are not going to get a good deal because they don't care about your bumper or shell or anything. They will sell it as a "Monster truck"

I thought you were asking about the trade in value on your truck. The initial post is kinda misleading because you said "trading it". To me that means trading in it to the dealer for another car. If you're selling privately, you can get $14-16k depending on the buyer.

Sorry to confuse. i should've just said selling, to me "trading" just means getting rid of it to buy a different car.

    I'm guessing you want a 996? 99-04, 05 is a 997 (except turbo, gt3 and gt2) and going to cost more.

Depends on your take of "most likely go bad". Most estimates I have seen say somewhere between 6-9% failure rate on the 996's, the 05-08 997's have had failures as well but the percentages are lower. By failure I mean premature catastrophic failure. Most happen before 50k miles but not all of them, I have heard of some with over 100k miles failing. There are preventative kits that you can do but they are not a guarantee against failure. If you do have a failure most of the engines can not be rebuilt. You can make the decision if you are willing to take the risk, I'm not a gambler so I wouldn't buy one.

If your budget will allow a 01-05 996 turbo is a really awesome deal and incredible performance for the money. The turbo's have a different engine (Mezger) that doesn't have these failures. Higher mileage 01-04 turbo's can be found in the mid $30k's. They are really awesome cars.

If the engine fails it will most likely not be rebuildable. You used to be able to get a new remanufactured motor from Porsche for $14-16k but I believe the price has gone up now. Used motors go from $8-12k.

The preventative IMS bearing kit is usually installed at the same time a clutch is done, the cost is usually around $2-2.5k.

I think it's 996, maybe 7.. I just think the 05 looks better than the 99-04, more would just depend on price if I got one. I would love a turbo but I don't think insurance would.

Depending on your age, driving record and usage the insurance might not be too bad. I was paying around $1400/year for my 94 turbo and that was with a agreed value policy of $215k but I rarely drove it. I paid $1100/year on my 95 993 Carrera with a value of $55k. However I always have several cars so none of these are daily drivers and I am 43 years old and have a perfect driving record. If you are 25, its your only car and you have a lot of tickets your rates might be a lot higher.

I've been there and done that. You'll get tired of whatever sports car you end up buying in a few months, and you'll be looking at trucks again. The thing that might make sense is to have both, but that requires money.

I personally don't plan to be without a truck ever again.

That is the exact Porsche that I want. Just out of curiosity, what did you sell it for?

I don't really want to list the sales price publicly but recent sales on 94 3.6 turbo's range from $125k for high mileage cars in need of full restoration to $375k for all original very low mile cars.

My car didn't have very low mileage and it just went through a year long restoration process.

Having dealt with the market on similar Tacos lately, my guesstimate would be $10K on trade-in and mimic others that say around $15K on private sale.

    Hi again,

Not knowing too much about you; I would recommend, before putting good money down on a exotic car like a Porsche; get to know the models. Talk to a few service technicians, get an insurance quote for a few models; and take a few test drives.

Great automobiles, terrific driving experience; and you will get a lot of attention, if you want it or not. But all that doesn't come cheap; if that is a concern.

I had good luck and a lot of fun driving the one I had. As I said before I kept a trade-in we took for a couple of years; company paid insurance, as I had a dealer tag on it.
But I was used to rear drive cars; so my learning curve wasn't as intense as a newbie. Don't ever underestimate it, Porsche cars are usually a lot better than their drivers.

You mentioned cost. Cost is irrelevant, to most Porsche owners. They love the car; and will do whatever it takes to keep it. You will never forget owning one.

Cost is very important to me, but for my age I'm good with money. the 996 and early 997 (I think that's what they are) seem to be the best priced years. Also I hear they are pretty reliable when compared to the RS, ///M, and AMG cars. The scarier the better, for me at least, just means I won't lose interest. As for the attention part that's why I'm thinking porsche. It's nice but in CA they don't seem to much attention, and for me that's a good thing because I hate talking to people
