Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), professionals from Canada, including nurses, can obtain work visas that are usually good for one year. Nurses are recruited directly by hospitals, at job fairs or by international recruitment firms. Many nurses are offered incentives such as sign-on bonuses, travel expenses and relocation costs, as well as scholarships for continuing education.

People need to get an education or learn a trade. Minimum wage jobs are for teens, college students or entry-level workers not head of house hold. If you are an adult married with children working at a minimum wage job its no ones fault but yours. People wanting more pay need to get better jobs. I started at 8 bucks an hour back in 1991 as a diesel engine tech trainee. Now I own my own shop and i dropped out of school in 10th grade.. Too many young people are content no drive to better them selves. This is the land of opportunity. Stop crying about your poor pay. Go get a better job. If I did it with no high school diploma so can you. You just have to do it and stop waiting for someone to do it for you.

No but it does apply with the problem in America. The entitlement mentality.

He was asking about minimum wage here and used the person in his post as an example. So yes it is relevant. .

Depends on the area and what the labor market is demanding for wages.

Nurses are well-paid here in SoCal. That's not the case in other areas.

In general nursing is not easy to get a job in if you don't have experience here..I have a couple of friends in the field and I know they are actively looking when they say they are. Not sure if there is also maybe an overabundance in the OP's sister's area.

My brother in law is one of the best auto-body men in the state of MA. He did the same thing, high school dropout and just busted his ass. He can't read or write very well but can work circles around anyone on cars.

I don't see how your rant about minimum wage and how people need to get off their ass and better themselves applies to someone who bettered themselves by getting a nursing degree , that's what I'm saying

A child grows up in a poor town. The schools in this child's district fail miserable at preparing their students for the next level but keep passing the students on and the child's family cannot afford a charter school because this child's family is barely making ends meat and it's far away.

Lets say this child graduates high school, but due to the schools in this area (that are no fault of the child) he only comes out with a 5th grade reading level.

Lets say this person gets a scholarship and heads to a 4 year. Despite studying 15 hours a day and going to the tutoring sessions (not to mention working), he still fails out. Why? because the school system did not do it's job correctly.

Now this person goes and tries to find a job, but no one will hire him due to his low literate level....except the minimum wage jobs where he works relentlessly to make ends meat....just as his parents.

This is what we call the fallacy of hard work: working hard is no guarantee of success in our society. None of this is the fault of the person. He like many others, got the short end of the stick.

Be lucky you have, and had, the opportunities you have/had. "Pulling your self up by your boot straps" works for a very dismal percent of the population.

Very true TeamSarcasm, but I figure there are far fewer who have been able to have advantages and got very far by doing not much with them. Good counterpoint though.

But back on topic....If your cousin hold out long enough, the affordable (for the gov...kinda) care act should get her a job pretty quick...because medical facilities will now be over run with patients with "insurance" :D

But what ever OZ-T posted about getting accredited, I would look into that
