Most definitely. The OR and Pro have all-terrain tires, off-road traction control, rear locking diff, off-road shocks, a better front recovery point, and a better approach angle.

None of em if you plan on crawling at an incline for an extended period of time.

    This and lots of funds.
My buddy has an old Honda CRV at the farm, with rotted out bologna skins, and it goes everywhere. Why? Cause it was bought for cash a decade and half ago, has been dunked in the creek several times, and bounced off every body panel it has.

I wholeheartedly agree with Junkhead. The TRAC/ALSD work amazingly well…like the Taco is performing magic tricks in situations a non TRAC open diff would fail. It’s gotten me out of some hairy situations. I dig the action one feels climbing steep hills.

Jeeps go well stock and tacoma's go well Stock. FFFFord, Chevy, and whatever else might go a little while... my 80 cj5 jeep went every damned where in the blizzard of 93 and summer mudding. Of course, they don't make jeeps that good anymore. From the problems with newer jeeps that my buddies have.. dependability wise, I'm glad that I have my Tacoma. Still pretty much stock and does really well. Adding suspension upgrades later this year for more crazy terrain. I wish I still had my old cj5 Laredo v8. That was a mean machine.

    100%.

TC in 3rd gens is a great system despite what others say about it.

Tacomas biggest weak point is its wheelbase and terrible departure angle. I learned that the hard way. :)4Runners/jeeps/LCs/GXs do much better in ~90% of situations.

There are times where a longer wheelbase is better for stability, such as rock crawling but I would say that’s about it.

So much depends on where you are going, the conditions, the skill level of the person behind the wheel.
I'd venture that 95% of the time a 4WD SR5 will get you in and out in style.
I'd also venture that 60% of the time a 2WD SR5 will get you in and out in style.
It's those last few points where upper trims are warranted.

In Australia they have a saying:
If you want to go to the Outback you take a Land Rover.
If you want to get back you take a Toyota.

Hear hear. I feel using ALSD solely has polished the skills some. Good eye.

Yeah, I was thinking of where a sr5 might be better than say an OR but didn't say it that way. You are right, a locker, or even tc based, is a huge improvement over a one wheel wonder

That's always a catchy line but not remotely true.
