Honda has a 2 step flywheel . Both steps are machined equal when replacing the clutch . You are correct
Our Tacoma,s flywheels only have 1 surface that needs to be re-surfaced unless the machine shop has to dig really deep to remove the dishing and heat cracks . If the machine shop has to dig deep into your flywheel , sometimes they will also have to machine the center where your crankshaft bolts mount . If they have to dig that deep , you are better off replacing the flywheel . If they do dig this deep , make sure your clutch disc does " not " rub on your crankshaft bolts
The only time you can cheat resurfacing a flywheel is when a clutch is in good shape but fails mechanically . Do you own a straight edge and a set of feeler gauges ? Its easy to tell if the flywheel is dished out .

    Awesome.
    I leaned something new today.
Thankfully I was easier on my Tacoma.
So I never needed to replace the clutch on it before I sold it.

(Unfortunately for my Honda. I was a teenager. That’s all I will admit to. Lol)

not sure where to buy flywheel shims that fit the Tacoma

welp, just ordered a new $70 LuK flywheel, and Exedy clutch kit. Still waiting on the Clutchmasters hydraulic TOB group buy.
Gonna try figuring out what other parts are needed to order for the job such as exhaust gaskets, flywheel stretch bolts, etc. and will give it a try.

    Thank you!

I'll look around to see what kind of thickness shims I can find.
Will try installing a new LuK flywheel; hopefully it ends up working and has no issues with starter tooth engagement.
But just in case it doesn't work well, I might hang onto the old flywheel for a bit (assuming it doesn't have stress cracks) to resurface later, if I have to swap it back in.
Am not to worried about having to go back in there multiple times/pulling the transmission again, since DIY labor is free and the more you do a certain repair, the better and faster it gets the 2nd time onward.

While Toyota used both Aisin and LuK for the clutch in the Tacoma V6, the flywheel was always supplied by Aisin.

Still, I expect the LuK flywheel should be fine for you.

If machining your original flywheel, you should machine the friction surface and the pressure plate mounting, maintaining the factory step. Opinions may vary but in my experience if you machine enough material that you need a shim, you should probably replace the flywheel instead, but that’s a general statement and shouldn’t be taken as gospel. Shims are a good idea, but are generally not needed for small machining jobs.

    Bump to revive this thread..

    I'm looking for a replacement flywheel for a 21' 2GR-FKS.

URD is out and doesn't seem to have ETA on new stock, if at all.

LCE has told me that they abandoned plans to make one.

I was hoping to go with heavy than stock as I do a lot of stop and go driving, hills, light off road.

Was planning on getting the dual comp clutch from lce:

    https://www.lceperformance.com/Dual-Comp-Clutch-Kit-2GR-3-5-LITER-2016-2020-p/1053099.htm

Anybody know of a heavier flywheel that might available?
