If by 'snap' you're meaning jerking..... I will never do it. Ever. If the strap hurt someone, then they're a dumbass for standing anywhere near it and deserve it.

Last two vehicles I pulled, I doubled the strap anyways.

Hell, I can go buy dbl braided nylon and make my own 'bubba rope' :) Honestly though, I've seen what a 3" dbl braid nylon can do when it breaks, granted those aren't nearly as big, but that shit will do some serious damage when it breaks.

So the 3-1/8 or 4-1/3" would be best b/c of the breaking strength? (compared to the 2-3/8?

Someone did that me once without warning, and we were using a logging chain instead of a strap. (strap was in the wife's car) I could just imagine that thing snapping and flying back at my windshield...That added a new level to my anger which was already pretty elevated from just being stuck...

am i the only one that throws a moving blanket (small) over the strap before pulling?

    - they're nice to have rather than laying on the ground to work on stuff
    - they help act as a counter weight over the strap if it breaks, not as nice as those pro-vinyl ones with the little shot bags in them, but it's kinda like a safety thing for me

(hood up is always a good idea too, when possible)

Does anyone know the life span of a nylon snatch strap. I have an old one that I bought about 25 years ago and only used it 2 or 3 times. Looking at it, it doesn't have any cuts or rips, but I wonder if the nylon is too brittle to use after all this time.

I would replace it not sure but I figure dry rot could effect it and better safe than sorry 25 years is pretty old for a strap.
