I would never buy a car new or used based on the monthly payment. Dealers love those who come in trying to buy a car based on a monthly payment. They simply finance you for a longer term. Your best bet is to save up for 5-10 years and buy the car in cash. Unfortunately 75% of Americans don't like to keep their card longer than 4 years.....we must have the latest and greatest ride. Look how many folks here on TW will trade in a 05-07 for a 10-11 Tacoma....Crazy...

Ya in perfect world, that's the way to do it. However if you need a truck for work, your current car is falling apart and even if you have the know how to fix it, you don't want to put $600-$800 in parts (not mentioning my time) to fix POS you hate..

I am planning to keep our vehicle as long as possible.

Hell I am driving the Taco until it falls apart...

Well if you need a truck for work, you'd buy just that. Not a truck that you will lift and put 35's on it. Again I'm not knocking on the folks who choose to that; that's their choice. But lurk around here and see the surprising amount of folks who upgrade from a 2 year old truck just because; absolutely no need at all and then bitch about the payment. The perpetual American dream is to always be in debt. With the economic meltdown of 08 you'd think more folks would realize the downside of living off of credit and instead learning to live within their means.

Ya I bought base Taco. I had to do something about the way it looked and drove. I absolutely hated how low to the ground was it and those shitty stock tires. Hell I only spend $600 on the lift and tires...

Hell it was even safety issue, those dunlop grandcraps were completely horrible in rain. The 31's I have now are very decent in rain!

Wow that is amazing. I was just down in Phoenix this past October for a little trip, definatly got me thinking about a move one day.

Don't get me wrong, I love where I live but $300,000+ for a 500-600 square ft condo basicaly means I won't be in the buying market any time soon. I won't even get started on what it would cost to get something over 1500 square feet.

That was a great read! I thought I knew all the tricks the car salesmen used, but from reading that I found some new ones.
The trick thats always used on me is they plant another customer that wants to buy the same truck I am dealing on. A blind man can see the guy is a plant and I tell them so, I tell them i'm not that stupid!
When I can't come to a deal the dealership always keeps the keys to my truck and pretend they misplaced them, I get out my cell phone and tell them I will call the police for grand thief auto if my keys are not returned to me in 30 seconds.
I stick to my guns what I want to pay, I bring my own paper and calculator and I write it all down for the salesman, I always go low on my down payment, and if we come to a deal I like I increase the down payment at the last min.
I have a general idea what the monthly payment is before they figure it out for me.
The thing that really buggs me is the dealers that give out free-bee's when you buy a new car, like a $100 gas card, they always hold that gas card hostage, saying if I want a lower price then I don't get the free gas card, so I tell them the gas card wasn't free in the first place? Then why do you use the word "free" I walk away!

I knew before I went to buy a new Toyota Tacoma that I was going to pay more for that truck, I knew I could have got a full size pickup for less money, but I wanted the Tacoma for the better gas mileage and its high resale value, I got $2200 off the sticker, was expecting less, I expected $8000 for my trade in, got $7800, I was happy with my deal.

The truck was 45ish incl taxes. Saving a bunch in interest payments going with 3 yr.

If your spreading your truck payments over 6 or 7 years you are paying alot in interest especially if your rate is somewhere above 4%. Best to just get it over with. And yes its way more than my mortgage payment too.

On my last truck (01 dakota) I leased then bought it and refinanced. It took me 7 years to pay it off completely and it was only 23Gs. I probably paid the bank 10K in interest. This time I vowed not to do that.

Smart car dealers know that most buyers only care about the car and the monthly payment. They only see a week into the future, and they want the car now! Overspend and overcredit, isn't this what caused financial turmoil in the US?

I get what you are saying- but you and I are going to pay close to the same amount in interest...Altho your truck was about 18K more than mine. Because with the extra I pay on top of my monthly payment I'm chipping away at the amount that interest is calculated on. I'd pay about 4 grand if i paid the minimum...I will pay a little less than 2 on my current payment sked...plus I have the option to cut my payments back to monthly minimum whenever I need/want extra money for any given month.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
True, but the bottom line on the sales price is a big part of it too. I don't know what the conversion rate is exactly, nor the taxes, but $45k seems very pricey for a Tacoma, even with every option available. Did the dealer do any extra mods for you?

Don't know what a Taco cost up there, but a bad deal can be just as bad a higher interest or longer payments if you end up paying the same total, whether over 7 yrs, 6%, or $4k over the MSRP; $47k is $47k
