    DOG
When God had made the earth and sky,
    The flowers and the trees.
He then made all the animals,
The fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He'd finished,
Not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine,
And give each one a name."

And so He traveled far and wide
    And everywhere He went,
    A little creature followed Him
    Until its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said, "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me."

Kindly the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
And called you dog, my friend."

Guardians Of The Night Author - Unknown
Trust in me my friend for I am

your comrade. I will protect you
with my last breath When all
others have left you And the
    loneliness of the night closes
in, I will be at your side.

    Together we will conquer all
    obstacles, And search out
those who might wish harm to
others. All I ask of you is
    compassion, The caring touch
of your hands. It is for you that I
will unselfishly give my life And
    spend my nights unrested.
    Although our days together
May be marked by the passing
of the seasons Know that each
day at your side is my reward.

My days are measured by The
    coming and going of your
    footsteps. I anticipate them at
every opening of the door. You
are the voice of caring when I
am ill. The voice of authority
    when I've done wrong.

Do not chastise me unduly For
I am your right arm, The sword
at your side. I attempt to do
only what you bid of me. I seek
only to please you and remain
    in your favor.

    Together you and I shall
    experience A bond only others
    like us will understand When
    outsiders see us together Their
envy will be measured by their
    disdain.

I will quietly listen to you And
pass no judgment, Nor will your
spoken words be repeated I will
    remain ever silent, Ever vigilant,
ever loyal. And when our time
together is done And you move
on in the world Remember me
    with kind thoughts and tales,
For a time we were unbeatable,
    Nothing passed among us
    undetected.

If we should meet again on
another street I will gladly take
up your fight, I am a Police
    Working Dog and together We
    are guardians of the night.

It's good to see there are plenty of responsible pet owners out there.

I looked into insurance and after crunching the numbers, I may have saved a few hundredbucks by having insurance on just Soichiro. If I had insurance on both, I'd still be behind.

Like many others said, they're like family and I feel obligated to do everything I can if the pet can fully recover and I can afford it. My cat is a common domestic short hair adopted from the local shelter. Nothing special. Go to any animal shelter in this country, and you'll find a dozen just like him. But he's my fleabag! :D It was worth every penny.

    neglect, mostly.
holy crap people. i don't know what we've spent, no more than like $300. i play with my dogs all the time and pet the cat occasionally, but i cant see myself ever putting more than a $1K on an animal. one of my dogs had her hip shattered by a car one time and the vet wanted $3k to fix her. my dad said "hmmm, if it would cost $3k to fix one of my children, maybe. but not for a dog." we were gonna put her to sleep probably, but she heeled up in a few months amazingly. could run faster than ever. still never understood how she managed to do that.

In order from highest to lowest:

Saint Bernard had bloat (twisted stomach for all you non ranchers.): $6500

Akita eye lid repair (it was obscuring his tear duct causing constant watering, infection and he kept scratching at it with his paw, ultimately scratching his cornea. Twice. Also doc screwed up first surgery and had to do it twice.): $4800

    Akita broken foot: $3500

    Saint Bernard scratched cornea: $2500

Longest ongoing cost: Saint Bernard Cardio Pulminary Adema. Doc prescribed a pill not yet legal in the United States (experimental), Vetemedin. Initial cost from the doc was $6 a pil and wanted to prescribe 12 a day in addition to 9 other meds. Ultimately had it shipped illegally from England for $2.50 a pill and gave 6 a day as a compromise. He lived a year longer than the doc anticipated and cost $28 a day total . Total cost over 15 months $12000+. He lived to 12, 3 years longer than the average Saint Bernard, and its the same one I imentioned earlier. The million dollar dog.
