Yes, depending on how steep the hill is, I'm using S1-S3 while in 4LO. I don't think it is torque converter lockup though, since engine RPM's are constantly moving together with vehicle speed in this condition...

I use it to keep it out of overdrive in the city, engine brake on hills, control RPM's while towing, etc as mentioned.

I also use it off-roading a lot. 4LO locked in 1st is great for slow descent. I also feel like it's easier on the motor and transmission to keep it in a lower gear when you want to go slow.

EDIT: how long before "should have bought a manual" posts?:) I'm surprised there's not any yet.

For me, S mode = Street mode
It keeps it out of the Overdrive gears when driving around town.

To lock out the overdrive gears, 5th and 6th are overdrive gears in these trucks, Towing and heavy hauling in overdrive are not good for the transmission. it also helps a lot in the mountains, and when your off road as well.

What is the point of S mode?

The best reason hasn't been mentioned yet, to disable the learning feature of the tranny.

Then whats the purpose of keeping your transmission uneducated?

i always leave my truck in s4 with the ect button on
It keeps my truck from feeling sluggish. If im on the highway (70mph or faster) i put it in s5.
