Long overdue for that update! Now we won't be able to go 80mph in reverse! ;)

Nothing to do with driveline strength.

More to do with emissions. It's much easier to control emissions on an automatic vehicle because the ECU and TCU can work together to keep emissions as low as possible as the two systems know what each other are doing. The way revs change during gear changes, sudden declutching, etc can have a big effect on emissions. That's why modern vehicles with MT have suffered driveability complaints usually centered around rev hang and rev limits, which is done for emissions.

Might also be that Toyota wanted the most refined engine/trans tuning possible, shouldn't be a surprise that slightly different tunes will work better with different trans options. It could be that the MT tune just feels better than keeping the AT tune.

The bigger bummer about the Tacoma MT is the ridiculously low rev limit, which to me is the biggest indicator that it's done for emissions....

Sheldon says it was for NVH reasons. Easier to just lower the redline than do anything else.

getting the manual in the 3rd gen made a little more sense. first, by most reports the 6-speed auto shift logic is lame so you dodge that. second, the 3.5L V6 needs to be rev’d up to properly harness it and the manual allows you to do that regularly.

if I were in the market for a 4th gen, I don’t think the manual would be very appealing. the new 8-speed auto will probably be adequately improved and the fact that not only can you not pair it with the highest powertrain option, but it is detuned (albeit marginally), would steer me away.

another thing that bothers me is the electronic parking brake. a pull-up handbrake and a stick shift are like peanut butter and jelly to me, considering how often it is used versus mostly just shifting to P in an auto

Real manual enthusiasts don’t care about any of that.

This is huge. 3.73 up to 4.066. The 3rd gen is way to high, clutch out and light throttle its happy at 8-10mph. Way too fast for parking lots and a problem for backing a trailer up hill.

So is it crankshaft hammering or NVH? Somebody's speaking with forked tongue. Regardless, this is a smart pivot because the crankshaft hammering sounds like an engineering/durability issue.

It’s the same thing. Crankshaft hammering is excessive vibration.

I believe tfl said it was rpm limitations. The manual have a lower redline than the automatic. I also think it is to prevent people from blowing their trans from clutch dumping.

Peak torque is also raised from 1700 RPM to 2800 RPM. You MT guys will NEVER hear the end of that...

It's not the 8hp I would worry about, sounds borderline of a weak component or design issue.

Sounds like they gave the MT models the minivan tune.

So no Ovtunes possible without damage ?
Good to know your a whopping 8hp lower to eliminate damage.

Not necessarily to eliminate damage. More likely to give the driveability/NVH profile that was desired.

I would 'guess' it may relate to rear thrust bearing stress because of the challenge in balancing a low displacement engine to achieve good NVH results.

Hard to believe 8 hp would make that big of a difference.
    No Ovtunes that's for sure.
Didn't worry about crap like that in the old days LOL.

Hard to say if it’s ridiculous without being part of the complex engineering project
