You don't get the manual for speed or efficiency. That was the case 30 years ago. Not any more. Autos do everything better now except for offering an engaging driving experience and obviously most do not care about that in 2023-2024. You get the manual to drive a manual. The 8 fewer horsepower won't be noticeable. I would get a manual Tacoma if they offered it on the DCLB but that has never been an option so alas, stuck with an auto. The world can be a cruel place sometimes.

Like others have said, just knowing the peak torque number and RPM doesn't give you much insight. I expect the MT tuned Torque/HP vs RPM curve will show that the new turbo 4 is a significant improvement compared to the current V6. And the differences between the MT and AT tunes will be less drastic than some are imagining.

With the AT, the slipping of the torque converter and computer-controlled lockup tames the impulse loads on the system. Due to the nature of the MT, you don't have that impulse buffering. My guess is that the Toyota engineers are just tweaking the power delivery a bit to maintain long-term reliability.

One thing I know for sure is that there will be posters on here bitching and moaning no matter what the actual torque/HP curves look like. :D

Not yet mentioned, current info says the ‘04 transmission will bolt into third gen 6MT’s. We shall see but I would anticipate if the swap is straightforward enough, it might be a really good upgrade for many of us.

Don't think this was ever answered but this specific transmission (or at least the set of ratios because the 2024 does not use the same exact transmission part # but it is all the same ratios) was mated to the 2GD-FTV diesel (2.4L) in the Hilux and the 7GR-FKS in the HiAce. The 2024 and the 2.4L diesel got the RC60F, the HiAce got the RC60J which was a cable shifted variant. All same ratios being the RC60. There are input shaft and shifter differences between the 2024 RC60F and 2GD RC60F. The 2024 version will bolt into the 3rd gen.

There is a very similar transmission (RC61F) that uses all the same ratios except 5th. That was used on the 1GD 2.8L diesel, 1KD 3.0L diesel, and 2KD 2.5L diesel.

I don't know the horsepower and torque numbers of any of those but I'm sure you can look them all up and see. The RC61F and RC60F should have similar if not identical torque capacities, They are identical transmissions besides the 5th gear tooth count.

Can you imagine how bad ass a lawn mower would be if it had a turbo 4 cyl?

The 1GD have more torque than the T24A. They both use the same clutch disc and pressure plate.

The T24A in the Tacoma having less torque for the manual vs. the auto is definitely not about the transmission's capability to handle the torque. It's about something else.

They also increased the peak torque to 2800rpms on the manual.

The peak torque range of the T24A is thousands of RPM wide though.

I can only speak for myself, but coming from the 2.7L / 5 speed manual with 160hp and 181 ft*lbs at 3800rpm, I will not be complaining about 270hp and 310 ft*lbs at 2800 rpm. May even drop her into 4x4 low range and pull out some stumps

I'm seeing a 50 HP Drop from the AT to MT option...that's huge and will certainly be a turnoff for anyone who normally wants a MT.

Toyota is clearly not a fan of manual transmissions. The only reason they're making more exciting vehicles lately is because they had to. I've been in so many meetings with their marketing teams and there seemed to be more interest in serving the dealer body than making a great vehicle. Dealers don't like niche products...they want to sell white, silver and black vehicles with automatics. The fear of interesting colors is a dealer driven phenomenon.

As soon as Toyota stops making manual Tacomas, I’m jumping ship to a full size truck whenever I need a new truck

I drove a friend’s 6 speed TRD sport the other day and it didn’t feel very powerful. I was expecting some good torque from 1500rpm to 2500rpm but it didn’t seem to pick up much until about 2500

On a dyno at the rear wheel, they probably have the same or the manual slightly more HP. There's a lot more friction in an automatic transmission than a manual.

According to Wikipedia. The Hilux 2.4 2GD-FTV makes 300 torque starting at 1600rpms when paired with their variant of the RC60F.
