Hey folks. Looking for some help in diagnosing this noise. Sounds like maybe a loose heat shield? TRD Sport Automatic transmission.

It will rattle if I’m in Drive.. shifting into neutral will stop the noise.

Also, if I turn the cabin air off the noise will subside or disappear momentarily.

This line of thinking had my local shop thinking it was something to do with the AC compressor..however they since installed a serpentine belt which bypasses AC to rule that out.. and the noise still exists.

I haven’t had a chance to get underneath yet but the rattle and squeak is getting worse with time (~2 months).

Thanks and I appreciate any insight!

It does sound like a heat shield. They typically rust through the bolt. You can either remove the bolt and reinstall with a larger washer or just remove it completely. This happened to a few on my 2nd Gen Taco and 5th Gen 4R. I just removed them.

A little late, but if you haven't figured out where it's coming from yet... I had a very similar annoying rattle and it ended up being a bolt on one of the catalytic converter support braces on the driver's side.

It managed to work itself loose and would let the cat rattle mostly when idling in drive or reverse. Took forever to find because neutral and park would hardly ever cause it to rattle. After it worked itself loose a second time, I bought a nut for the other side to hopefully help it stay in place, only time will tell. Pretty sure it was m10x1.25. It's only been a few months, but hasn't come loose again... yet.

Don't have my truck today to get a pic but found a random pic off google and circled the obnoxious bolt in red:

Definitely sounds like a heat shield, or related to the exhaust system. My tundra did the same when those heat shield welds rusted away. Don't need no stinking heat shields anyways.

Sounds like a heat shield to me as well. Second the suggestion to check any mounting bolts on the exhaust system.

Mine also has the Cat death rattle , Stealer wants 350 USD to fix , didn't start until my frame received the secret sauce injection from the frame recall.

Update , bolt fell out put a new one in problem solved , deflector was in great shape, thanks to South Dakota not using salt in the winter, just sand.

I have this same issue, sounds like it comes from under the driver side only at idle while in Drive or Reverse. Sometimes it doesn't rattle at all, especially when I'm trying to replicate it for someone to check out haha. I need to check this bolt and report back

The only time it will not rattle is when the Dealer looks at it under warranty :D.
