I did the flush this morning and only made a small mess. A little bit of brakleen and half a roll of paper towels later and it’s all good. Fingers crossed my leak stops.

I always make a mess when swapping power steering fluid. I use a Mityvac hand pump, but I always manage to spill some.

I turkey basted as much as I could from the reservoir and I would have been fine except that the hose I was going to use to plug the reservoir inlet was too small. I didn’t let that stop me from trying to jam in on while power steering fluid kept pouring out. I’ll get it right next time.

The latest Toyotas with hydraulic PS still use ATF, with Dexron/Mercon (Dexron III) as the spec. That is also what Toyota recommends for older vehicles that called for Dexron II.

How long did this take you ? Sounds like a second person to help would make it much easier?

Really getting front end up in the air......and finding a tubing union was 90% of the job....

really only took minutes.......there's not much fluid in that whole system.....
just have to go slow and keep refilling the res......

I've seen others do it with the engine running........yeah big mistake....
pumps just fine....with engine off.....trust me.......

Beauty of it is.....now I can use a turkey baster and suck the reservoir couple times a year....
.........so everything stays nice and ruby red......
.........I dont have a dog........I'm living vicariously thru the truck......

Following up. It’s been nearly 2 weeks since the flush and so far no leaks.

Here’s a cool trick used in order to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock without starting the engine or jacking up the front end. I put folded lawn and leaf bags in front of the front tires and rolled forward until they were centered under the tires. I could spin the steering wheel from lock to lock with one finger.

    Thats a great ideal.....
.....last week we were trying to get a light to stay on a stand.....
just the weight of the cord pulled the light off....
it was covered in those contractor bags folded up....

after about the fifth time ...I said ah @#^ it......

Whohoo! No leaks at the two month mark after replacing whatever was in my power steering with Valvoline Max Life ATF. Had the rack boots off the replace the ITRs last week and there are no leaks anywhere.
